Default DME Temperature Sensor Wiring

On my '83 944 I noticed that the wiring harness to the DME temperature sensor had been spliced and taped up. When I removed the tape I found that someone had soldered a resistor in line and the connector looks like it was originally for something else (has extra wire). Car runs okay but it idles a little rough.

Anybody know why this was done? Should I replace the sensor and remove the resistor? Also, does anyone have an old harness I could get the correct connector and about 4 " of the wiring, please let me know.
