944 rear window in plexiglass/lexan
anyone kno where i can get a hold of a plexiglass or i think they are called lexan rear windows. this would save lots of weight. anyone have one?
also it would require a new hatch frame, also if anyone knos where to get one.
thanks

Is this a track car only? I hear lexan scratches very easily and isn't too great for daily drivers.
A more practical weight saving solution is a 924 hatch, which is interchangeable and made of thinner glass. I have one on my '83.

Plexiglass cracks and scratches so easily that I don't think you will want to use it, I gave my brother a 86 Subaru while he was in college and someone broke the rear window out, we replaced it with a piece of plexiglass from the Home Depot, it is very difficult to cut it to a not square shape without cracking it and it doesn't look very clear and scratches without anything going across it like a wiper (since the Subi didn't have one)

Hate to argue with you Luis, but I don't agree with your statement about the 924 glass being lighter and can now back it up with my own personal experience. The glass and frame assembly from the 924 and the 944 that I weighed side by side were exactly the same. The only difference in weight would be due to the spoiler on the 924 being smaller (I weighed the frame and glass only, comparing a 78 924 hatch with an 83 944 hatch).
This had been bugging me for a while, as I had heard that it was/wasn't lighter from various folks, and finally had to find out for myself.
The best way to lighten your hatch for street duty is to get the aftermarket 968 wing that is being offered out of Tulsa, as that weight a bit less than the big ol rubber ledge, and looks a might purtier, too. (Spoken in my best "Tulsa" accent! lol)
On a side note, when are we going to get another one of your wonderful 951 cab driving reports? I am always very jealous when I read them, and it usually results in my taking my 968 for a long drive! lol
Regards,

One problem, Scott - the 78 924 didn't come with a spoiler. So you were weighing a different hatch, perhaps from a 931? Luis, does your 924 hatch have a spoiler?
I'm rather surprised to hear that they may be different thicknesses of glass.
LP Aero makes the lexan for GT Racing. Buy it from them or their distributor, I think it's Dave's Auto... information on this contact info was stashed on the 944Cup forum, mayeb a few months ago, might have to search for it (www.944cup.com). I got one from them, it's still sitting in my attic, not sure when I'm getting around to using it. Many options, including thickness and tinting, when you order. Price is roughly half of that from GT Racing. They also make the rest of the lexan you'd want for a real racecar; windshields, quarter windows, etc.

After years of lugging the original 944 hatch on my '83, the 924 unit that it was replaced with (along with a partial roof transplant) after the "tree branch accident" is surprisingly easier to operate.
It's true that the spoiler on the 924 is rather small, but I had also noticed that the glass was "flimsier" on this unit than on my old one which felt like a slab of quartz crystal compared to this one. I won't argue the weight difference since Scott has empirical evidence proving me wrong, but they do have different part numbers. I guess this is just because of the different spoilers?
As for the 951 cab, funny that you should ask. I took a long drive in it last night and after driving the S2 cab recently it was a change to hear the whistle and growl of the turbo when it spooled up and delivered. This car is stock, but since I've never experienced a modified 951 it really feels like all he%% breaks loose when you hit 4K rpm.
Having the top down makes it even more intense because you can hear the engine quite well over the windshield as well as the exhaust note which reaches you cleanly over the smooth rear. No hatch rattles here <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="wink.gif" />
Since Xmas. the car has a set of factory 17" C2T rims and Michelin Pilot Sports which was a clean upgrade from the stock Design 90s and enhances the black finish.
Did I mention that I love this car?

Sorry about the swedish, must've been messed up in my head.. Sandén here in Swedan has got macrolone(?) rear hatches for 5300 SEK (about 688 USD).
