Is this factory, or custom?

That looks like factory to me. I've seen piping like that on factory red seats.

I'm certainly not an expert though...

Those seats w/piping were in older 930s with red interior. I like the look. Reminds me of the inside of a BMW M3.

I had similar seats in my 1990 C4, but they were linen color with blue piping. linen door panels with blue carpet on them, blue carpet, dash, etc

I've since changed it to all blue...

it's factory. there was an 86 or 87 951 for sale recently here in the philly area with an identical interior. can-can red leather with yellow piping. only difference was the clubsport steering wheel.

You could (and still can) order any interior color you want. It's all a matter of cash.

Good point Pete. Does nay car company have an options list as long as Porsche? You can pretty much get anything you want on your car. From special color piping to special color door panels to special color floor mats to a special shift ****. I like the fact that Porsche actually gives each option a special code or price so as to encourage the creativity of the owner, rather than say "Well we'll do anything you want, but you have to come up with the idea."

You could spend more on special option codes than on an actual new Porsche.

Martini Ed. 924s had red interiors. There's a high chance that this could have been custom. Check the option codes where the spare tire is in the rear. If you see any odd numbers put it on here and someone could decode it for you.
