Post Changing clock light on 84 944

How do I replace the bulb for the clock on an 84 944? Do I have to remove the whole center console area???
Thanks,
Mike

No, you don't have to remove the whole console to get at the bulb (not all the way at least). Since its an 84 (old style dash)its a different procedure than is listed on most FAQ pages which show the steps indicated on clock bulb replacement for the new dashes (post 85.5). Remove all the screws which hold down the console. There are a few on each side hidden in the carpet. Then remove the two big ones under the ash tray. I don't recall if there were any more, I did this to my '83 about a year ago. I think there are a couple on the console face as well. Then just pull/slide the entire console back enough to get at the back of the clock. My radio/head unit got in the way and had to pull it out some (out of the console)as well. Once you can get at the back of the clock, there is a type of wire harness/bulb holdster that pops out of the back of the clock. Just pull that out and replace the bulb. No need to pull out the clock itself.

Look at the face of the bezel that holds the gauge cluster in place. If I recall (my wife is out and about in the '44) there are two screws. The separate section with the gauges sould slide out. Beware. There is a rat's nest of wires back there. Not one of Porsche's neater approaches. Bulb placement is straightforward. I wish I could recall totally; it's been awhile... but I do know you do not have to remove the entire console....

No need to pull out the clock itself.

LOL. That would be easy after all the rest. My clock light is out too. I'm just waiting for a better reason to tear apart the interior.
