Post home-made vacuum leak finder

So I made one of those intake pressurizing adapters out of half a fuel filter. A local shop gave me an old Purolator fuel filter with a 928 part# but it doesn't fit in the J-boot very tight. I had to push it into the J-boot 1.5 inches or so and it still kind of leaked air around the outside, I could feel it. Plus, I couldn't use the big clamp due to the outer ribbing on the J-boot. Did I get the wrong filter? Is the porsche filter the exact diameter of the AFM outlet?

Thanks,
Tom

you need a 944 or mid 80's 911 fuel filter.

I'll tell ya fits great: A 2 inch schedule 40 pvc socket weld cap. About 87 cents at Lowes. You need to somehow adapt your pressure source. I drilled, tapped, and added a valve so I could regulate the air flow. I found 2 leaks which have resulted in a much smoother idle.

Good luck. Somewhere I have a pic of what I did. Drop a line and I'll send it when I find it.

Thanks for the replies guys. I think 944 cars actually use a 928 part # fuel filter, I'll check my PET tonight to be sure. Maybe the Purolater isn't as large as the genuine Porsche filter Mahle?

Sam, I got a 2 inch PVC cap from Home Depot but it doesn't fit. Does Lowe's have larger ones? It seems a 3 inch PVC cap would be perfect but I don't think they make them. The turbo's must have a larger intake boot than the NA's do. It needs be around 3 1/8 inches in diameter to seal as tight as the AFM does. Why has this project been such a PITA for me but easy for everyone else??? I'm glad it's Friday!

Thanks,
Tom

Do you have any pictures of your tester for a turbo?

bchapman,

Here's the page from DME/KLR test booklet showing how to do it.
