Short fifth gear for 200 or so higher rpms to give you better performance on track and better feeling around town.

0.829 ROW

0.729 USA

Will you take paypal or how do you want payment? $375 shipped to zip 43105 ??

Also, did you pull this from a running car or did you buy/trade for it already out of a car?

one other question, this should be the same trans as what's in a standard 944 for that year, correct ?? I heard 87/88's had short 5th.

Tom

steinsgarage@gmail.com goes to my phone, easiest way to reach me. (and I can do paypal there)

Tom,
the 88 944 and 87 /88 924S had the short 5th gear. Along with the Euro cars. The QK box is a 924S box. No speedo plug and set-up for early tranny mounts. Swapping the mouts to late style is not hard, but you will lose the speedo if used in late car. For track car that is no big deal. You could also buy it and simply swap the 5th gear pair. That only need a simple gear puller from local autoparts store to do, however it is easier to just swap the entire boxes in most cases. The exception is if you have an LSD long 5th box and just need the 5th gear.

Payment sent !

I have an early car with LSD and tall 5th so I'll just piece / part them to where I end up with LSD and short 5th in one housing and open diff and tall 5th in the other case. I'll toss the open diff unit in the trailer as a spare.

Good plan. The open diff long 5th box will suck, but it will get you through a weekend.

I took a bunch of photos when I did my 5th gear swap. I will need to create a write up around it.

There is a really great article on it in Excellence magazine last year I believe! Just look for 944 transaxle diff replacement!

Much easier to change the 5th gear pair vs the entire LSD unit.

You just remove the back cover pull the gear clusters off both shafts, swap them and bolt it back together. Nothing really challenging if you work methodically.

Yes but if you pull the diff. to switch out into 924S box you can reverse the cup springs in diff. unit to get more torque to the rear wheels, clean everything up, install new seals, re -silicone the side cover. This gives you an entirely fresh transaxle that you have inspected and the 924 S transaxle is a few years newer than his other 944 transaxle.

Different methods to get the same result this is just what I would do.

I've got an 924S LSD box with short 5th that I'm putting in my car this winter (currently open diff with tall 5th). See you on the track next year.

Yes I have an '89 chassis with '88 engine that has a 924 S box in it and I have been using 3rd, 4th and 5th with a 5800 redline for a while and this keeps the track speed higher and thus I get faster times. Versus using the entire 6400 redline with 2nd 3rd and 4th! I feel after 5800 the car doesnt pull anymore and your wasting your time not getting another gear. Of course your closer to the edge with the spec suspension and 15" wheels but thats why its so fun right?

Got the trans today, Thanks !!! The Fed Ex guy made a smirk over the packing job but it all appears to be in one piece, found the baggie of bolts in there too...

Joe,
If you do a write up on the 5th gear swap. please send me a copy. Or, if you have the photos in a zip file, email em to me please. steinsgarage@gmail.com I had no issues with my current trans so leaning towards just swapping the 5ths out, but who knows how I will feel when I actually yank my old trans out.

I'm not planning to mess with the trans swap till January ish, as right now I'm monkeying on other problems in another car and have to finish one thing to free up the garage space.
