Post Do I need to use an engine stand?

I have my engine out the car right now and all it needs is to have the headgasket replaced. I have a hoist and engine stand. Currently the motor is just sitting on the floor with some concrete blocks under the crossmember(still attached). What I am wondering is can I replace the headgasket as the engine sits currently or should I put it on the engine stand.

If I should put it on the engine stand then do I have to take the clutch off to bolt the motor up to the stand (it currently has the clutch and bellhousing still attached) also what size bold should I use it this is indeed necessary?

Thanks in advance for any and all help. <img src="graemlins/bigok.gif" border="0" alt="[thumbsup]" />

Wink

I would put it on an engine stand... and avoid the risk of damaging anything in the event it rolls to the side or anything...

You can do it while it is on the floor, but as mentioned above, the risk of it tipping over is there. At the very least, find a way to keep it stable.

No need to remove the clutch, just the bellhousing. Use the 4 bolts to secure it to the stand.

Do it on the floor!!! If you put it on the stand, then you have to take off the bell housing, flywheel, and all clutch parts. No sense in doing that!!! It is a pain!

Why did you take out the engine if you just needed a new head gasket???

I was wondering that too!
I would check out the clutch. It's easy to do, since engine is allready out of your car.
