Post Balance Shafts and Oil Filter Housing Reseal

OK, one of those questions, “Since I am there should I…?”

I did not take apart the balance shaft’s housing. Should I? What are the seals/gaskets to replace? I have PET but would like the feedback from someone that has done it before I guess and buy more/less than I need to.

I also bought the kit to replace all seals and gaskets in the oil cooler/filter housing. This is what I found when I opened the thing. Nasty! No signs of water and oil mixing but a lot of stuff in the water passage.

If all this was there I just wonder how is the inside of the radiator! Any way of knowing if the radiator is OK, meaning not clogged with all this garbage? A radiator shop can do that? I do not know if they have ways of measuring the efficiency or cooling characteristics of a radiator to determine if it needs replacement.

Looks like someone ran the wrong coolant in there at one point. Get the radiator cleaned and flushed while it is out. Cost me $25.

Do the balance shaft housings. They can be a source for leaks, and while you are there, you might as well re-seal them. Also, inspect and replace the 4 bearing shells if needed. You will need the 2 orange o-rings at the end of the shafts for the round plugs, 2 of the clear gaskets, and the 2 main seals. Yamabond the front and main housings to the block and you will be fine.

Ahhh... knew I forgot something. There are 2 large O-rings that go on the end of the front housings. They seal the housings to the block, no Yamabond on them. Yamabond the side housings only.

Those should have come with your bottom end gasket kit.

I am doing much better. I still get pretty tired when I do much of anything physical, or after a long day. Doc said to expect that for a few months. My lung capaciity is coming back, but there are times where I am short winded.

It was pretty scary. I have never been sick to the point of total exhaustion. I woke up one morning laying on my stomach and did not have the strength to do a push up, or roll over to get out of bed. Later the next day, I went to the doctor, and I had an 84% oxygen saturation reading. 90% is concidered critical, so that is why they wanted to put me in the hospital.

Anyway, enough for now.. good thing is that I am recovering and I can get back to working on the car. Thanks for asking, it means a lot that you are concerned.

No. It is a pain in the goat ***.

I got my engine stand for $35 at Pep Boys, on sale. Watch the paper for sales in your area. (Wal-Mart, Sams Club, etc.) You want a 1/2 ton unit. Much less and you may find the motor on the floor when you least expect it.

When you reassemble the balance shaft housings, do it with care and a use a (small) torque wrench, and follow the proper tightening sequence (used to be on Clark's 944 Garage website, not sure where else to find it).

The two larger bolts that secure the primary bearing saddle are particularly critical. They carry a lot of load at high RPM, and get torqued in stages to a higher value than the other bolts, 25 ft-lbs if I remember correctly. Those bolts are actually known to fail from the stresses at high RPM.

Steve,

This started as a change of the rear engine main seal... as since I was there....

So I never purchased the kit...

Any chance you can validate the part list?

4 - 944 101 121 10 – bearing shell
2 - 944 105 321 00 - gasket
2 – 999 701 875 40 - seal
2 – 999 701 652 40 – ‘O’ ring

Do I need the following?

2 – 944 101 145 03 - ring

---

Also, on the last question - any consideration when installing back the oil filter housing?
