The only thing incorrect in the article is where Sid says you lose the tilt-up feature. Not so, the levers are placed in the recessed area on the roof. The 924 and 83 944 all worked this way but they had a retaining strap so the roof couldn't be lifted from outside...I never needed it on 3 conversions but it does help prevent the rattling on real bumpy roads.

this issue is going to determine whether or not i decide to do the conversion. i want the tilt! so are you saying that if i follow his instructions on my 86 951 i will be able to partially open the moon roof? how so?

You release the rear latches twist the levers 180 deg. and set the levers in the groove on the roof...it's that simple. I've driven mine at 140 and it never flew off. Here's a pick of my 86 manual conversion with the SR tilted. You can see the levers standing up in the groove. You can always fabricate an elastic strap if it makes you feel more comfortable about the SR coming off.

that's nice and looks simple. i'm likin' the pic. but 140...was it in CA?

Yes...in the Sierras, locals know where I'm talking about. It was an 'event' so to speak. Great road, long straightaways, excellent visibility, no traffic or crossroads for 20 miles.
