Default Transmission Leak

Hey guys, looking for some rennlist wisdom. On the 92 the trans is leaking gear oil, but I can't tell from where. The drips are coming from the bottom and back of the trans and diff, but I can't see where they would be leaking from. I cleaned everything well, and it doesn't seem to leak unless it's being driven, which blows the oil all over. I was thinking the output seals, but the area around the CV joints is bone dry, and the area at the input shaft is dry as well.

Anyone ever deal with a trans leak that can offer some guidance? Thanks!

From what you describe, most likely the output (axle) seals. Oil leaking here wouldn't necessarily get all the way over to the CVs.

I've replaced these on an S2 while I had the trans out for a clutch job. Not terribly difficult with the trans out, but trans in place would obviously be harder -- how much harder I can't really comment on.

You might have to drive just a short distance at low speed after cleaning to catch it definitively. Good luck.

thanks! Yeah, I have a feeling it's that...or I'm trying to determine if there is a vent on the 968 trans that would blow fluid out. I'm also researching if there is a seal at the slelector rod that could go bad? Thanks for the insight!!!

The output / cv shaft seals can be replaced with the trans in the car. I would suggest getting some UV dye from a local auto parts store and see if you can identify where the leak really is. Most of the '68 transaxles I have ever messed with leaked on the left output shaft seal for some reason.

It's all over the left side, so that seems reasonable to me! Thanks - I'll get some dye on the way home, put it in and go from there. Thanks a lot for the advice!

It seems to be coming from the very rear of the trans - it seems there is a big "plug" for lack of a better word, at the back of the trans. I compared it to the blue and yellow cars, and they both have the same thing, but the green one looks like someone has put sealant around the cap/plug thing....crap.

So I put in some trans stop leak, and am going to put some more sealant around the plug, hopefully that will slow the leak until I can drop the trans and take it to a shop to get inspected....

There is a plug back there that could leak. Unfortunately it would be very difficult to replace it with the tranny in the car due to the close proximity of the spare tire well.

Would I have to remove the rear portion of the trans (after taking it out of the car) to replace that big plug? I'm thinking of just putting some RTV on it and hoping for the best....

No the plug just gets tapped in there. Try to clean the area thoroughly with lacquer thinner/carb cleaner/acetone, etc to get all of the oil off and then the RTV may do the job.

Perfect, that's exactly what I needed to know! I'm going to clean and seal it this weekend - I have the seal conditioner in there now, so I'll drain the trans, clean the plug and surrounding area, seal it, then refill the trans and keep my fingers crossed. Thanks so much!!!

Ok, so the leak is coming from what is labeled as 12 - so I'm going to clean it and try some RTV and see if that stops the leak. If it doesn't, and I drop the trans, any ideas on if I can remove this without taking the back cover of the trans off?

I have a very vague recollection of replacing that cover when I rebuilt my trans about 10 years ago. If the trans is out of the car - all you need to do is poke a screwdriver into it (it's rubber) and pry it out. The cost of a replacement should be less than $10 or $15. I have that item and two others totaling $23.29 from the dealership (albeit 2001 prices) on an old expense sheet I used to keep updated. (I have since decided against this as it depresses me to see how much I have spent on this car).

With a new cover in hand - I would use Loctite retaining compound (the green stuff - not sure of the number) around the lip. Carefully push-in the cover evenly with the aid of a bearing/seal installation tool. I don't believe it is possible to install this part with any assurance of success without having the transmission out of the vehicle.

Best of luck.

Put RTV (Ultra Black) on the cap in the back, and replaced the output seals, and it's leak free. Thanks for the help everyone!!!
