Question buzzing starter

a couple of weeks ago my starter would not work.
the solenoid engaged but the motor would not crank the engine.
this however turned out to be just bad connection at the battery.
but now when the temperature here has dropped to around freezing in the mornings,i have another problem.
now i get a short buzzing sound just before the engine cranks.
i assume this is from the starter motor spinning a bit prior to engaging.

is it possible that i damaged my starter by running it with a bad connection?

i really don't like that buzz, sounds like bad news for the sprocket(?)i think that's the word)

Sounds like you should take the starter out, put it on the bench, apply voltage and see what happens.

If you have a clutch the starter interior gets covered in clutch dust which will gum things up. The sproket/pinion gear then hangs up on the starter shaft.
