You'll miss sixth gear, though.

Now, if you're looking for terrific fuel economy, a second overdrive gear would help, but then you shouldn't be driving a Porsche: buy a Civic instead!

A 944S2 is a wonderful car, but IMHO, a 968 is a superior car, and may be worth the extra $$ you spend on it.

Just my $0.42

Wow. I sincerely appreciate everyone's opinions, but where I was hoping that by gathering people's perspectives I'd be able to narrow my own down, the exact opposite has happened. Between all the different 944/951/968 models and specs, it has become even tougher decision which to pursue. If *you* had a choice and were starting from "scratch" to obtain over 300hp and/or a :12 1/4 miler or better, which would you pursue and WHY? (I am planning on mods to engine, i.e. turbo/sc, headers, etc.):

1. 944S or 944S2
2. 944S2
3. 951
4. 968
5. 968CS

Thanks guys!

If money is not an object:
968 + turbocharger + intercooler + cash =

Slightly smaller budget:
951 + Guru MAP & chips + Garret turbo
or
944S2 + SFR supercharger or turbo

Any of the above will get you over 300RWHP. The 12 sec. 1/4 mile is tougher as these cars are not designed for hard launches. The 968 with it's lower end torque may net faster times from a standstill.

If you are seriously shopping for a 951/S2/968 just buy the best one you can afford. Any of them would be a good starting point provided the car is in excellent stock condition.
I'm looking to do the same thing eventually and I'm not going to limit myself to one particular model.

The 6th gear isn't really an overdrive, it isn't geared as such, the 951 turbo's 5th is taller.

If you are so seriously concerned about your 1/4 times, buy a used Vette/Stang, bulid the engine and add NOS, and go fast. If you are concerned about having cornering and stopping ability, and you understand how fast 250HP can be, buy a 951.

The 951 can make as much HP as you are willing to spend. It has all the basic ingredients to use that power well.

My suggestion to you is spend $6000 on a nice, well maintained high mile 951, and spend $1500 at Skip Barber and learn to drive with the HP you have.

No amount of HP can remove an asshat, which is what most HP clowns usually end up wearing. Not insulting, just stating the facts.
