Post Wheel refinishing results! (pics)

Ok, this weekend, I finally painted my wheels! All I have left to do is apply a few coats of clear coat, and then the project is complete!
So, here's the step by step:
The original scuffed & scratched wheel:

Sanded and primed:
<img src="http://boards.rennlist.com/upload/Z-wheel-02.JPG" alt=" - " />
After about 3 coats of metallic paint. I thought the color would be black, but it's more like anthracite:

Detail shot: the white specs are some kinda metallic flake.

Hopefully, I'll have pics of these on my car at Summit Point next week. I only did two wheels, 'cuase the other wheels I have (a set of 4 968 5-spokes) are in decent shape for now. But I may paint them too, if these don't get too scuffed up from track usage.

So, whatcha think?

Shaun:
Three things I will always get confused:
Eye brows vs. eye lashes
Right vs. left
Tires vs. wheels.

Title fixed.

What kind of paint did you use?

And I think those will look great on the track, good work, it is a huge improvement (and I really like this trend of dark wheels showing up on the board).

ian:
I just used Rustoleum Primer, Rustoleum Metallic Paint, and (next): Rustoleum Clear coat. For track wheels, I'm not too concerned about a concours finish!

Al P: I wanted to say, "You'll be giving me the passing signal now!" But I know it will take a lot more than R-compounds to be faster than you! I'll make sure the point matches the desired direction!

Couple general painting questions:

Why prime when painting over a good painted surface?

Why clearcoat a solid color?

These steps seem to be taken as common sense, but I can't figure out why. I thought priming was first to help prevent rust, and second to help the paint adhere. If you sand down the old paint, won't new paint stick no problem? As far as clearcoat goes, it doesn't protect from fading, does it? With regular paint, you can just buff it out until the color returns...From what I've seen, clearcoat dies hard and requires a complete repaint to fix.

Tremelune:
Perhaps primer was a bit overkill, but I suspect the metallic paint will adhere to the primer better. As for the clear coat: it's a protective barrier: hopefully the wheels will chip less with a few good coats of clear coat.

Adrial:
I plan on attending the Pocono II event. Looks like it's going to be a blast!

As i work in a paintshop, i will explain.

Primer: To get better (even better than the sanded paint) 'grip' for the paint.

Clear Coat: Easier to clean and as z said, harder to get thru than paint as it has no pigments.

Ah, thanks for the explanation. What's the word on mixing brands of primer/paint/clearcoat?

Last summer I refinished a set of silver phone dial center caps. On my first attempt, I just sanded the original paint, then I sprayed on silver. The result looked like crap; the silver paint did not adhere evenly. So, I used a chemical stripper to remove everything. Then I did primer, paint (silver, with black for the insignia), and clear coat. The results looked great.

I am buying some used phone dials, and if they need refinishing I'll probably do the same thing: chemical strip, prime, paint, and clear. I don't have very much painting experience, but the primer seemed to make a big difference.
