Default Starting question about cranking engine and fuel pump wiring

After clearing up my battery drain issue I am now left with a non-start car. It sounds bad but I think is better because the battery is now stable. I'd rather have a stable battery and go from there.

The previous owner had hot-wired the start position on the ignition switch to the coil. I removed that. Might have to put it back but don't want to jump to that conclusion yet.

This afternoon I am going to start running through the Clarks Garage fuel issue check procedure. I am now examining the schematic prior to doing so.

So my questions are this

1. Let's say the fuel pump, or relay, or wiring related specifically to the fuel pump is bad. When I turn the key to the start position on the ignition it should still crank the engine even if the fuel pump is not running correct?

2. How easy is it to 'hear' the fuel pump from inside the car?

FYI... The car has started before, when the wiring was messed up.

THanks,
Jeff
