Question Question on 15mm v 18mm Balance Shaft Belts

I've just changed my balance shaft belt (amongst other things). The original was the older 15mm type, and I was supplied with the newer style 18mm type.

Am I right in thinking that this just goes on the pullies that had the 15mm belt on?

Mike.

As far as I know, yes, it just fits on the same pulleys. It does get a different tension however. The new setting is 3.5 +/- 0.5 instead of 2.7 +/- 0.3

I just purchased all new belts, rollers, tensioners, etc. and was really surprised to see the "new" (it's been out for 5 or more years) 18mm belt was now listing for over $90 from Porsche. The last one I purchased four years ago was in the $45 range.

I have not compared the new 18mm to the old 18mm belt, but I did notice the new one has a yellowish center section cord and I don't recall that being on the old belt... but I can't say for sure.

How did you manage to get the user # 6-double "o"-7? It can't be coincidence.

Right on!
James, does your '66 Aston Martin have the ejector seat option?

Interesting... do you have the "new" part#... or manufacturer and part#?

Skip</strong><hr></blockquote>Nothing different about the part number other than it's the '04' part instead of the old, superseded '02' part. I will look at it more closely tonight and compare to another used belt I have. The new belt is made in the UK.

The tension setting comes form a Technical Service Bulletin for the 968 from 1995. At that time the new belt was mandatory for the 968 and optional for all other 944s. Of course, that was some time ago, so all you can currently buy from Porsche is the new style. That doesn't mean some supplier of non genuine parts won't give you a 15mm belt...

Wink

Either the '007' number is a coincidence or someone in rennlist admin has a sense of humour!

My Aston doesn't have the ejector seat, but whenever I'm in it, it's difficult not to look at the gear lever to see if there's a button there or not...

I got my 18mm belt from Euro Car Parts, it cost GBP26+tax, that's about $40 in colonial money. That's about par over here for a balance belt. It's OEM rather than repro. A repro one is about GBP19+tax.

It seems to fit on the old pullies rather well. Makes me wonder why they didn't put on an 18mm belt to start with, it's obviously designed to take it.

Porsche always eventually engineer out their poor design!

Mike.
