I did this twice on my '84 and once on the 968. It's really not that bad.
When indexing, take careful measurements if the spring plate (spring arm) relative to the casting. You need to measure this in a way that you can repeat it with the car on the ground and in the air. I ended up using a small piece of aluminum L channel with index marks on the spring end housing so I could put the channel back in the same spot and repeat the measurement.
Another thing I didn't see in most of the write ups I saw was the dovetail hanger from the torque tube (drive shaft) that supports the middle of th torsion bar carrier. You will need to pry the dovetail out past th hanger to get the torsion bar carrier housing to lower enough - otherwise it'll just teeter side to side (one side up - the other down)

BTW - when I indexed the '84, it was to adjust the ride height. Both times, with careful measurements, I got the height I wanted spot on.

I'm interested in this as well.
Last alignment, it was noted as not worth the cost (labour) to adjust my rear ride height (3/4 -1 inch)AND camber. I have 1/2 degree (approx) of positive camber Not major, but not ideal either. I'm looking for some motivation to take something apart that works perfectly fine to try and improve it slightly AND not screw anything else up.

It isn't too bad of a job. I've done it 3 times. 1st time, replace torsion bars for higher spring rate...2nd time...fixed jacked up ride height...3rd time, put the higher # in my 2nd 944. Got it right the first try on the second 944.

A lift and lots of jacks make it easier...

In for some pics and info. The shop that did my car messed up when they did the 86 conversion but I have to fix it as they said "It's supposed to be that low."' and we never argued. crappy.

No worries, take your time. I'm busy swapping a new motor into my brothers 944 tomorrow, so I'm in no rush to do my T-bars.

It is easy (as far as T Bars go) if you have a lift. I wouldn't try it if I didn't....but that's me.

It took two times to get it right as the first I turned the wrong way and elevated instead of lowering. After that it was all downhill. Just take your TIME...

Default Torsion bars re-indexing OMG **added Pics**

so here we goo
i started by jacking the car up with enough room to walk under. then took the wheels off

then dropped the rear sway bar

after that i made a mark to line the spring plate back up when bolting it back together

then drop the spring plate from the rest of the rear end. and pry the torsion case off and pry down.(not much force to do it just we bit)

the pry off the torsion spring plate( come right out and the torsion bar sometime sticks to the spring plate. and i think it make it easier that way.)

make sure you are careful pulling it out because it does come out easy! and be sure you know where it was so you know where the stock ride adjustment was.
then feel around in there where you feel a clip or two depends on how low and stiff.( turn it toward the sky not the ground.) and put it back in. and back together.

this is what two (clicks) or two splines will do and this isnt the final adjustment i did i rose it back up an inch with the spring plates all the way up. and put the rear sway bar back in and go for a run.

i highly recommend you double check your bolt and possibly lock tighting them down. and you need good shocks in the rear!! haha

but overall it is a super easy job and only took about 3 hours! so you guys can do it. and if you dont want it that low. move it one click or spline. and use the spring plates for final adjustments.

and that is my half *** wright up on re-indexing torsion bars! im 19 give me a break!!!

(more pictures tomorrow PHOTO SHOOT!!)

Cheers

Mike

You did this wih stock t- bars? It has to be riding the bump stops and if it's not now when it settles it will for sure.

What's the suspension setup on the rest of the car(shocks, struts, springs)?
