Default Poor FM reception...

I did search but didn't find anything specific enough. I must confess that this isn't Porsche-related but it might be helpful to those with windshield antennas. The factory radio/cassette player in my '02 Subaru had a pretty decent FM section using the factory side window antenna (same idea as wires in windshield). I replaced this unit with a new Sony DSX-S100 which although a fairly inexpensive unit (around $150 at Best Buy), it has some nice features like I-pod/USB stick stowage hidden within the unit (no CD player) so you don't have to remove them when you park. This unit hooked up to the factory antenna has really poor FM compared to the ancient Subie unit... I found this hard to believe and re-checked the antenna connection, etc. I then purchased an antenna booster very similar looking to the one in the (early) 944. It helped a little but still disappointing. I happened to have a spare fender mount conventional antenna that I plugged in and held at an angle (parallel to a-pillar like on older Subies) and reception was dramatically improved (at least as good as the old radio). I'm extrapolating on one data point here but is it possible that these window antennas need more attention to matching the receiver? I'll install a 'real' antenna if that's what it takes but does anyone know any other tricks to get the new unit to play well with the factory antenna?

Are you sure there isnt a built in antenna amp that needs to get power from somewhere?

there is an fm booster under the dash on the passenger side. It should connect to the radio for power. It has 2 black wires that provide juice to the booster. Without the booster you will not get a signal. The antenna is in the windshield.

Thanks guys. A little more research indicates that there is 12v needed for the side window antenna. RTFM - actually RTFFSM (read the F-ing Factory Shop Manual)...
