Post Running Rich??

This may be a dumb question, but what makes a car run rich?
A guy at my local shop said that he thought that my car is running rich. I would like to fix it myself if possible but I don't know where to start looking. Thanks.

As I recall we were talking about how the back of my car turns black after a few days of driving. He said that it might be caused by the car running rich.

As far as how it runs, I don't have any symptoms except an exhaust leak that smells an awful lot like gas.

Wouldn't that be oil blow by from the turbo? Mine was doing the same thing until I replaced the turbo.

I thought that it would have been oil too. I guess that is why I'm confused.

I guess I need to determine what the symptoms of a car running rich are. Can you tell a car is running rich just by the way that it runs?
