The procedure for replacing motor mounts says to support the engine with a jack and a block of wood on the oil pan. I am also replacing the rod bearings, so I need to take the pan off at the same time. How can I support the engine without buying/renting a hoist? Has anyone come up with any creative solutions to this problem? Thanks I appreciate any help.

I've used this trick on a few cars, namely Honda's when changing timing belts. You have 2 choices, 4" wood posts or the better solution, 2" tube steel. Basically use the steel/wood to span the shock towers. You might need to creat spacers with more wood, or by welding a plate on each end. Then you can drill holes in the cross piece to mount hangers to bolt the engine to. You can get create and use eye bolts or all thread to make is usefull for other cars. I saw a guy once with 2 1' sections on top of the strut tower front to back bolted to the cross piece supporting a big truck motor.
I hope my description was somewhat good. Most important thing is to be carefull. Make sure everything is tight and solid before you climb underneath.

I have a very similar one for my Ford Probe, I think the manufacturer is Home Depot.
