Post rod bearing questions

I am doing a rod bearing job on my 951 and I recieved the following reply from Sunset on my request for oversize bearings:

"On the rod bearings, I show that you would
need 8. It seems funny that they would ever split a set, but that's how
they price them. So if you are price checking and our price seems high
let me know. Porsche doesn't tell me if the price includes both halves
or just on half. Usually the 12.91 dollar price is for one bearing shell
only. So if your dealer is telling you that you only need 4 instead of 8
let me know, but they would have to be sure of that as that would mean
this is one of the instances where Porsche's quantity needed is
different than the other cars. Sorry to make this confusing I just don't
want to mislead you or make you WHAT THE?? If our price seems way too
high. $$$ down below. Thanks"

So do I need four or eight? Are these the best ones to buy?

Thanks

I show only full sets (8 halves) for ~$50 (1st oversize, .25mm) Not sure if that's what you are asking?

Good Luck!

Why would someone need oversized bearings? Maybe if you spin one and get the rods machined?

I think if you spin a bearing, you need a new rod and the oversize is just for grinding the crank journal. I don't think you can get an oversize for a normal size crank and a re-ground rod.

Please correct me if I am wrong.

Generally if you spin a bearing the rod is resized by taking some material off the cap and rod where they meet, then honing the big end round again. This makes this rod lighter than all the others. Replacing the rod might be a better idea.

If the crank is damaged they can turn that rod journal down to clean metal, and use a thicker rod bearing to make up the difference.
