I have a '83 and I'm pretty sure there is no black box behind the spoiler. No siren either, just horns. Are you sure that's not some sort of aftermarket alarm system? Maybe the key switch isn't enven connected. On the other hand, I've never looked for the alarm board. It could be anywhere.
You can get acces to the back of the key switch fairly easily by removing the screws that attach the panel and gently prying from the bottom. Its attached to the window, so it won't come out all of the way, but enough so that you can look around in there.
Surely the alarm is not designed so that it limits the engine to 2000 rpm when its armed or tripped. That would just mean the a thief would just have to drive away kind of slowly.

Well - my brother in law re-soldered the siren wires. When he started the car, as soon as it "died" the alarm went off. I guess it was really, really loud.
Sound like we might have found the problem - I need to either:
1. Bypass the alarm somehow - ideas ? ?
2. Have a key made for the old alarm lock - but how does it come out . . .
3. Buy a used alarm lock with key and install it.
Could it be we are finally on the right track?

I was talking to a locksmith last week about this.
Remove the cap around the alarm keylock and it is supposed to unscrew from the outside and push in. On my 87 there is a plastic panel at the rear of the door jam that pops out to get to the plug for the wiring.
The alarm lock can be rekeyed to work with the ignition key. I was quoted $50 because it has to be cut open and resealed.
I asked around about the location of your alarm box and was told.
They are all by the DME.
and
It may be in the left rear cubby hole by the sunroof motor.
H.T.H.

Mine is the factory alarm - per the installation and option codes. I have a very early 83. I have learned that very little is similar with other years . . . . Date on the car itself says 82.

i feel your pain on having an 'early' '83 model year. mine was tagged April 1982 and I have also noticed many differences. i didn't realize they came with alarms. where did you find the information to decode the factory label? best of luck to you in solving your problems.

There is a killer web site with a decoder - I think it is:

Give it a try

The factory manual wiring diagram for a 1983 944 (US model) shows an alarm system. A large gauge green wire (2.5 mm^2) goes from terminal 1 on the DME to the ignition coil. A smaller (0.5 mm^2) green wire tees off the large wire, splits and goes to the tachometer and alarm box. The manual and diagram does not indicate how the alarm works, but it appears that it grounds the wire between the DME and the coil when the alarm is triggered. If you can locate and unplug this smaller green wire, your car would probably work, but your tachometer may not.
I have no idea where the terminal and alarm box are physically located in the car. Sorry.
