FYI....Half shafts
This is from another board. Thought it would apply here also.....
I had the typical knocking/clicking coming from the rear of my 944 (190k). While looking around for CV joint replacements and rebuilds kits, I stumbled upon the CarQuest web site (www.carquest.com). They specialize in rear axle and half shaft rebuilds. I just installed one of their rebuilt half shafts (all new CV joints, boots, greased and ready to bolt in). Cost me $83 and an hour of labor.

I have heard of swapping the L/R halfshafts to increase the service life, is this common or recommnended? Naturally you would have to do it before they started clicking.

Yup, swap and rotate, or simply rotate... anything to put the acceleration forces on the other side of the races. It's a better idea to do this in conjunction with regreasing/rebooting... again, before the clicking starts.
Be sure to use new bolts and clean the female threads very well.

Possible, but unlikely

Non-Lobro I think they'll end up being "ACEI". A similar line of thinking as most OE vs non-OE compromises... like Motor Mounts. How long do you want them to last, how strong do you need them to be, and so on... My comment was just as information to those who may not be aware of the reason why some replacement parts cost significantly more than others.

Yup, sorry for any confusion. The Lobro units are actually considered full OE (original equipment) as opposed to simply being a product of the OEM (original equipment manufacturer).

They are not new CV joints. If you read the halfshaft section, you will find they are remanufactured CV joints. This is as I expected. New CV joints are much more expensive. There is significant price point pressure in this business and very few remanufacturers are using new CV joints.
