I think so... but as I'm not at all good with electronics so I'll just state what I've measured, i.e.:

With the volt meter on the red wire I get 12v when I touch either the blue or the white wires (and this happens without having turned the key at all).

Thanks!

What do you measure with the red lead of the volt meter on the red lead of the hatch motor and the black lead of the volt meter on the hatch motor brown lead.

Personally I don't think you are having a circuit logic problem. I really think that your switch is a little nasty inside. You don't need electrical experience to disassemble and clean it. Just unplug the switch from the car and take it apart carefully on the workbench. It snaps together. Remember how it goes together as you take it apart. Wipe off the old grease, brush all the contacts lightly with fine sandpaper. Just enough to make them shiny, no more. Dab a little white lithium grease wherever they contact or slide. Snap it back together and try it.

If you were able to disasseble that motor, this should be a piece of cake for you!

OK, I measured the voltage between all the hatch motor leads and there is no voltage. This includes the red wire and the brown one. Of course when I press the switch the motor moves...

So, what do we think, switch issue or something else?

Thanks again!

Ah! Yup - fuse #1 is dead. You nailed it!

Now, I knew about this because the sunroof wasn't working but I didn't realise it was also part responsible for the rear hatch!

It still leaves me with an issue however... about a year ago this fuse started blowing every now and then. I thought it was because of the sunroof motor struggling and taking too much current (and hence was about to clean it out) but now I'm thinking it could be related to the rear hatch as well somehow.

Any suggestions as to why #1 would start blowing at random?

Thanks again!

There is a clutch in the sunroof drive circuit that is adjusted to slip which limits the drive motor current in-case the sunroof is binding. Sunroof information:
