Huh? I have a 944NA and it doesn't take anywhere near 8.8 seconds to reach 60. Closer to about 7 seconds.

On a crisp northeastern night like this one, I could probably even get lower than that if I wanted to torture the car. But I don't.

i'm pretty sure the real deal was something like this:

volvo wanted to hype the new 740 turbo wagon back in the early 80s. these things are ok, but obviously not sports cars. they found one spec that they could make into an ad, and it was that the 740 turbo is faster 0-50 than an NA 944(yes, that's 50 folks, the 944 wins getting to 60 ). hence, with the making of the 944 turbo porsche put out the ad, which i can't find right now, that said something like "and despite silly claims to the contrary, able to run leisurely circles around a volvo wagon on any race course in the world." incidently volvo was in a huge marketing rush at the time, putting out this and a claim that ammounted to "our chassis is so strong you can put a ryder truck on the roof and it's ok" or something, i think they actually falsifed that one and had to recall it cause the truck was stripped down...

as to the newer volvo wagons, the turbos are pretty quick, guess it's possible. but this is the story i've heard many times over...

Not sure about the N/A, but I do remember Volvo claiming that their turbo wagon could out accelerate/outhandle a 944 Turbo. Have you guys ever seen this ad? If you could read the print, you'd see it includes a comment directly regarding Volvo's claims. It says "...despite any silly claims to the contrary, able to run leisurely circles around a Volvo turbo wagon, on any racetrack in the world"

Thumbs up

Yep, the Volvo engineers have been doing their homework. Their T5 engines found in the V70, S70, and now the S60 produce about 240 horsepower from a 5 cylinder turbocharged engine. The best spec I have read is 0-60 in about 6.1, athough I've seen it in a few other magazines at 6.5.

I bought one for my wife two years back and the power is fantastic. The only thing holding it back to possibly getting right at 6 seconds is that it has anti-slip controls from 0-20 mph to prevent loss of trackion right when you hit the gas.

I think our 968 might barely edge it out in 0-60, but I don't think I'll be putting it to the test.

Volvo is releasing the 300 hp 2.5L 5cyl in wagon and sedan forms. Looks like it is going to be quite the family car. 6 speed, 300hp, 0-60 in the high 5's some where. Would make a great daily diver.

I have an 850 Turbo sedan that I bought as a family car. A set of chips later, I am making about 275 HP. It surprises a good number of people when I can hit 60 in about 6 seconds. In complete comfort. In a brick.

BTW, There is practically no turbo lag when compared to the 944 Turbo and I still get around 20 MPG in the city and 26 on the highway!

Just to put the flames out before they crop up - I still love my 944 Turbo a LOT more. <img src="graemlins/beerchug.gif" border="0" alt="[cheers]" />

In the system of 0-60 measurements, 7 seconds is a lot quicker then 8.

I remember seeing a race where they had Volvo Wagons included. They looked pretty fast.

I'll give you the mileage, but seriously, which of you fellow '83 owners has seen 130 on their speedo? Mine's been up to 110 and that's about it. Now the S2 and the turbo regularly see 140...

We've had two V70's in the family... both N/A though, first one with the 140hp inline-5 and the later one with the 170hp. Hated both of them - the amount of understeer they have is amazing, and when you couple that with zero feedback through the steering wheel, it really gets boring.

... the new Passat is much nicer though

and on the subject, yes, turbo Volvos definately can kick a 944's ***. Or at least mine, I "raced" an innocent-looking 850 wagon once (had to get over to his lane, and I thought the easiest way would be to gun it off the line). Turns out it was either a turbo or an R model and very fast - we were even to the third gear and then I figured it'd be just easier to go behind him

I think there are many cars in the 80's that were faster than the 944 n/a. However, none were built like the 944 (great workmanship) and not many were as nimble as the 944. Yes, mustang gt's, z28/iroc-z cameros/firebirds, mazda rx-7 turbos, supra turbos, 300zx turbos, mr2 turbos, dodge datona z turobs, etc were all faster than the 944, but 944 is a PORSCHE and built like a porsche! Better overall workmanship, in my opinion.

Now the turbos and turbo s's are different story! They kept up with supercars of that era, such as corvettes, ferraris, even the 911's!
I heard that the 86 to 88 turbos werent that impressive however.

I am still searching for a nice 944 n/a. Seems like everyone around where I live is asking too much. Much different numbers than the kelly blue book would indicate.
