3/4 gauge when tank is full
Someone posted something similar to this the other day and someone else responded by saying that the fuel sender or something needed to be cleaned off in order to make the gauge in the dash read 4/4 when full instead of 3/4. Is this a common problem? And what exactly is the fix and where are the items to be cleaned located exactly?
thanks guys...

It is the fuel sender,it is in the tank, you can get to it thru the hatch floor.I t gets cruded up over the years.Ive needed to do this since I got my car.Not on the priority list for me!It is a faily common problem! All of them seem common.hahahah

I just purchased a used sender, cleaned it internally, and measured the resistance and it was perfect. When I connected it, my gauge still read 3/4 even though I was manually moving the float to full with my hand. Could dirty connections on the instrument cluster cause this?

I put a new OEM sender and it still reads above 3/4 but still not full. And its still jumpy all the way to dead empty. As long as the near empty reserve light comes on, I can live with it...

bad guage connections caused my lighting problem from long ago.. instead of my temp guage working my master warning light would get progressively brighter. i took out the guages to fix my odo gear, put em back in then my lights AND fuel guage were screwed up... i was PISSED... so i took it apart looked at the connections, reconnected, and it was fine... i'd give the connections a shot first, you never know!
happy fixin!

I had (and still have!) the same issue. Last weekend I pulled the sender out...cleaned it up with some very fine (800+) paper and re-assembled. No change.
So I think I'll pull the instrument cluster and replace the bulbs AND clean up the contacts.
So yes, do the instrument cluster cleaning first...it doesn't smell so bad!!

funny story-because when I got my car the guage didn;t work at all, with it always staying in the middle (1/2 full). I had intentions to look at or fix the damn thing but never got to it. About 3-4 months ago, i filled up and ping it jumped to full, so i kept an eye on it, still using my trip odometer to judge when i needed gas. Well since then it has worked without any problems at all. But i still reset the trip odomter everytime I fill up- just in case...

Iceshark, where is the best place to add an extra ground wire? I measured a 0.07 volts difference between battery-ground & body-ground. Original wire with cleaned connections. Only problem I've got is I think I cross threaded my bellhousing ground bolt when I cleaned it. I'm scared to take it out again!

Tom, with my Headlight kits, I have everyone run from the front of block, upper balance shaft housing cover, to the left frame rail. Just under the left headlight bucket.
I can send you a fat #4 wire with fireproof sleeve for $20 if you want. That will take care of most ground problems.
I was ordering some #4 and got charged for sales tax. I complained and they sure went the extra mile. I have about 50 extra feet laying around.

I went and checked mine after the post on voltage,,mine read .05. So I put the #4 wire on beside the lower balance shaft cover, went to a chasis ground, the voltage no reads .01. Thanks Dan.

Bret, you are talking about a sender voltage?
I don't know exactly where all the ground problems are with the 944, but they are sure there in spades after all this time aging. An additional ground to the frame certainly does wonders.
