Post 1989 S2 for sale, Boulder CO

I've decided to make a push to sell my 89 S2 coupe before winter. As I now have the S2 Cabrio the 89 is redundant. The car is located in Boulder, CO but is ready for a long drive.

The specifics:

1989 944S2, 172k mostly highway miles. Head supposedly rebuilt recently. I do not have the recipts for that but I believe it.

The car has new motor mounts, new brake pads/rotors, and a few other minor things.
The timing belt is good, it was replaced with the head rebuild. I retensioned it last month along with the balance shaft belt. It should last another 30k miles with another retension or two (which is really easy on an S2, takes 10 min.)

Metallic medium blue exterior, blue leather interior. Decent looking but not perfect. A good daily driver. Cold AC, CD player (factory 10 speaker system with a Pioneer CD player) keyless entry, cruise control, dual airbags, ABS, removeable sunroof. Good tires.

This car doesn't really need anything right now except maybe an alignment and an oil change is due in 500 miles or so. I've been offered $5500 for the car, I don't think I'll go quite that cheap but I'd probably take $6000.

how much oil does your car consume? one qt every 500 to 600 miles is the norm for these cars i heard.

You're asking the right questions. Unless you're looking at a turbo, a good example with moderate mileage (around 100K) should consume very little oil per 1000 miles.

My 83 burns around 0.75 quarts per 1K miles, but it's closing in on 200K on the odometer and has never had any engine work. I also drive it pretty hard and that increases consumption.

The normally aspirated or NA cars like the 944, 944S and 944S2 should consume very little oil between changes. In another thread you asked about models to avoid. This goes hand in hand with the mechanical updating that the owner has done.

For instance, the control arms on pre 85.5 cars have replaceable ball joints, whereas the later cars need to have the arms professionally rebuilt or a special ball joint kit applied. This is more expensive than replacing the early ball joints which are basically VW front suspension parts.

An interesting year for the non-turbo cars which is often overlooked is 1989, when I believe the engine displacement for the base 944 was upped to 2.7 liters versus the regular 2.5.

If you can afford one, the 944S2 is a great non-turbo model, with a marvelous 3.0 liter 16-valve engine that has wonderful low end torque. The cabriolets are more expensive, but the coupes are often sought after for racing. Coupes without sunroofs are more valuable for this reason.

Keep asking questions and learn as much as you can about these cars before buying!

I've only had the car for 8 months and I haven't really tracked the oil consumption, but it seems to be a pretty small amount. Maybe a quart every 2000-3000 miles. I can't say for sure, but it's not enough for concern. I'm told if driven hard the S2 will use a bit of oil, maybe someone with DE experience would know more about that.

The 944S2 has an external oil cooler that is usually the source of oil leaks for these cars. The fix is really quite simple. It seems that the oil leaks where the supply and return hoses connect to the oil pump housing and the oil cooler itself. These hoses have o-rings at the end of them that cost about $6/each (requires four). I found that all four of these o-rings were in excellent condition so I reused them. The leaking occurs from the connection getting loose. Simply remove the hoses, clean the mating surfaces and o-rings and reseat.

A day of DE will consume a noticable amount of oil. I go through 1.5 to 2 quarts per event: about 1 quart a day. Based on what I've heard from other S2 DE owners, this is normal.

Other than DE's, my car doesn't really burn or loose any oil on the streets.
