I've got the same problem, and asked on here about two weeks ago........ no responses at all! I get the feeling the rheostat has gone, and I hope it doesn't mean replacing the whole control unit (ca $500!!!!!) Next weekend is my 'car' weekend so hopefully i can take a good look then.

You need the resistor pack. Located on top of the fan housing at the base of the windshield. It's a long thin white assembly held on by 2 screws. There's a wire plug on top.

There are thermal overload switches under the plastic fan cover on the white resistor pack. They get dirty and cause this, but they can be cleaned. Some use a little scrap of sandpaper, I used a drop of battery acid on them, followed by water and cotact cleaner. I opened them up a little with a small screwdriver to get the acid inside.

Cleaning bought me about 3 months, then I had to bite the bullet on the Porsche-only part, like $150 - Ouch!
You'll remove the rubber strip along the firewall (It's just pressed on), CAREFULLY pull back the black plastic cover (working from the driver's side as I recall), and find the resistor pack held into the blower-motor assembly be 2 screws. Pull it out, remove the harness, clean contacts best you can, and you're there. To confirm failure, you could swap it out with a buddy's from any late 944.
Just one of the prices we pay for driving 15+ year old cars, I guess. The good news is that the new one will probably last the next 15+ years
