Sternum strap?

The previous owner installed all of the interior goodies on my car, so I can't comment much on the installation... but here's a pic that shows the setup i.e. note sternum strap to keep the harnesses from rolling off the shoulders, the padding on the roll bar to keep the harnesses from sliding around on the bar etc.

Crow seems to be quite reasonable... according to their website, a regular 5-point latch & link harness is $80, and a 5-point cam lock harness is about $150.

Hope that helps.

Good luck.

Wink

What they are saying is the inside lap belt bolts to the stock seat belt anchor, which is part of the seat. This is not legal for PCA Club racing or SCCA, but plenty for DE or Autocross. I find it hard to believe the stock anchor points wouldn't be strong enough, they are re-inforced to hold the brunt of a belt yank with a 3 point setup, why not with 4? (I know the answer to this but don't want to go into it) If you just bolt to the tranny tunnel, who knows what thickness you will find!
I have a 4 point using my rollbar and the stock bottom anchors. Every tech and passenger has been more than satisfied. Sternum straps probably would help, they could slide off smaller shoulders. I got my belts from Simpson, but don't know where to get them cheap.

Hugh.

Thank you. Hopefully we will meet again next year
and can chat a while.

When I get in the passenger seat of a car that has harnessses(with Stock seats) I put the stock belt over the harness as a precaution. Just in case the shoulder belts slide over the shoulders.

Direct quote from 2002 PCA Club Race Rules
[quote]Safety: Line 13
Five for Six point 3" competition harnesses (with 2" sub belt), properly mounted, are requried. Harnesses cannot be mointed to the Seat or seat rail. Mounting must be to the chassis backed by large diameter washers or to the roll bar. No two harness staps can be attached to a single mounting bolt. No Y-type shoulder harnesses are allowed. The angle of the shoulder harness going back from the driver's shoulders cannot be above nor exceed 40 degress below the horizontal plane of the shoulders. All seat belt straps shall be made of nylon or dacron polyester and be SFI approved and dated. Strap material must be replaced every five years, but straps should be inspected regularly and replaced sooner if needed. All cars are required to have dedicated race seat with routing for straps.

No I know that you are talking about DE and open track stuff, but I feel that mounting requirement for PCA club racing are easy enough to meet. No some DE organizations may not complain. In fact most probably won't. However I still think it important for people to know what is "race approved" you can still do whatever you want, but it is better to know where you stand. Note factory chassis seat belt locations typcally do not have backing plates. I have seen most racers use these as the outside lap belt does not have a "though" mounting anyway. Clearly though the seat rail is not acceptable.

POC also have similar verbage and harnesses are required for racing and Time Trials

[quote]
POC GCR 2003
Section 10.6
Harnesses must be mounted either to the chassis, backed by large diameter washer, to the roll bar or cage, but not to the seat or seat rail. No more than one strap can be mounted to the same mounting bolt.

Here is the POC Verbage on Seats..
[quote]
POC GCR 2003
Section 10.7
All high back seats where the headrest is an intergal part of the seat must be equiped with "H" style shoulder harnesses. Shoulder harness mounting that depends on the seat back either for position or for support will not be allowed. The shoulder harness straps must remain on the shoulders in all situations. A "sternum strap" or similar design is not acceptable. The angle of the shoulder harness....

10.9 Anti-submarine straps should be mounted such that they will not allow upward vertical movement of the lap belts due to any crushing of the front seat in any sitution.

For POC
Roll bars are required in stock class K-N cars and all improved, production and V and Z class cars in time trials in Time Trials and Racing Series.

PCA Requries Roll bars in stock classes and Roll cages in all GT classes.
