Default New Guy

Hello, my name is Elliot. I have just purchased my first of hopefully many Porsches: a 1985 944. The car is Ivory with a brown interior, couple bruises here and there but it runs pretty well. 82,600 miles on it. I currently attended college and I'm majoring in Automotive Technology and Repair. So I know a lot about cars in general, but I'm hoping to learn some Porsche specific information here and also get a little help and advice on my car when needed. I'd actually really like to work at a Porsche dealership for a few years then start my own business restoring classic sports cars, but we'll see, I'm only 20 I have a while until that happens.

Here's a picture of my car in the garage:

Hi Elliot, Welcome to Rennlist.

Nice looking early car you have there. You will have plenty of fun with this car, sounds like it has found a good owner. Keep us updated on your project.

I need to do a timing belt and water pump for peace of mind so I'll spend a weekend doing that. Other than that I don't really intent to do much to it, I like to stock look and feel. I might get some wider wheels and tires for safety sake but I haven't decided yet.

Hi Elliot, Another Gent has the Arrnworx Tools for the Belts/Rollers for sale at a good price. No one has offered his price or made a best offer yet. I have the Arrnworx Tools and they are of the best quality, but I have the Porsche 9201 Belt Tool. I bought his Rear Wheel Bearing Tool for the later models and it has saved us several hundered $$ above cost and time so far.

Do I need the specialty tool to do a Timing belt for this car? Or does it just make it a little bit easier?

Welcome to Rennlist nice car, like the Ivory color. Since your replacing the water pump make sure you buy an updated turbo style water pump ,if the one on your car is old style.Best investement you will ever make.Pics below showing the difference between old style & updated style.Last pic show what you need to update .The white pastic fitting is just a block off plug, it doesn't connect to anything. As far as buying the tools mention by Larry I believe you should, not only will it make the job easier but you'll do it rigth .Will also be an advantage for you since those belts has to be done every 35 to 40,000k miles or every 5 yrs. There is peoples here that does it without special tools but don't forget they been at it for years.Take care & happy wrenching.

So if I want to get a Turbo water pump what VIN code do I use to get the part? The Porsche dealership here won't sell the parts to my discount hook-up without a VIN number...

Elliot ___why buy from a Porsche dealer witch will bleed you to death ,try one of the ( Sponsors) here on top of page either Pelican Parts (888) 280- 7799 or Vertex Auto 305-442-2727 talk to them & tell them what you want to do they will guide you in,there is nothing wrong buying a rebuilt one with those pump, will be cheaper for you & still do the job,I went with a rebuilt one on my ex 83 -944 four yrs ago & had no problems what so ever with it work like a charm.

Nice looking Series 1 car Elliot. I totally agree with Ernie. Pelican, Vertex and Paragon (to name but a few) are excellent suppliers and carry a full line of P-products. Porsche dealerships are not the answer to your present needs. They are brutally expensive. Larry also makes a fine point: if you are wrenching on your car there are some tools that make it easier by far: Arnworks Tools. Keep us posted on your progress.

I get a 40% discount from the dealership so I don't see why I shouldn't use factory parts. I'll price compare first I guess but I prefer to use new parts whenever possible.
