turbokev, I too have an '83 and am going to start work on my 968 swap next summer, I would do the S2 swap except I would really like the help Variocam provides down low, the the switch up high. Have been talking to some (very) reliable sources here on the list and it appears that it will be quite possible (look at the diateam.com site). Like everyone says, it is not feasible or orthodox, but definitely something different. IMHO, a lot of guys have the means, they just aren't willing to put in the time/blood/sweat/tears/swearing it takes (no offenese to anyone). I hope to have the short block completed by this time next year and the head done by spring 2004 (sucks being on a LOOOOOW budget), but I guess that's not too bad, Perry got his done in a few days shy of a year. BTW, if any of you guys know of 968 short blocks for sale, let me know...I've found a long block for $3000, and short for $2500, from the same company. Just stick with it kev, and you won't be disappointed. Show that rice up whenever they say "I can beat early 944's all day long." Just smile ( ) and let 'em have it.

For me it was straight forward since the early 944 and the 924S are very similar. Did it because I had a 45k mile 924S that had been wrecked and I knew the motor was still good. I went out and found a tired 84 944 with coolant & oil mixing in the motor for cheap. Tried to run the motor and it did work so I replaced it with 924S motor rather than bother fixing an old motor. It makes the same power as an 87 944 and about the same as the 84 motor I took out. I did have mess around with fuel lines since the come in to the motor in a different place in the early vs late cars.

You didn't have to swap the harness and the DME. You could have used the DME, harness and fuel rail from the 84.

Would have to used the early idle valve from the 84. Did you use the later model one or just not use any?

Interesting that the cams in the later model 8 valves have a longer exhaust timing but the engine has a slightly lower conpression ratio.

What other parts from the 924S did you use or keep?

Where's Roberto & Redeye when we need them? They came out to our last SoCal Pizza Run in their 968-powered 944S3. Very clean and quite a sleeper too!

I believe Clark Fletcher has (had) two NEW 968 blocks available for $1550 plus shipping...but then you still need the crank ($ouch$), pistons, etc...

Fuel Rail was not an issue. The early and later cars have th fuel lines coming from different sides of the motor and I had to adjust for that. Not a big deal.

I swaped the DME and harness since there were a number connectors that were different shapes between the early and late (924S) motor. Figured it was easier just to pull the harness and replace with 924S harness rather than start cutting to make connectors fit. Also I figured it would be best to use the DME that was designed to the 87 motor. I *might* cause problems later so why do it when it was pretty easy to just swap the DME. Remember too that the DME location is the same on the 924S as the early cars (under steering column).

Not really sure what happend to the idle valve. Honestly I just pulled the motor from the 924S with as much stuff still attached to the motor as possible and stuffed it into the 944. I works fine.

What else did I take..
Hmm.. Found the gearbox in the 84 had bad syncos so I stole the 87 924S box. Had a bad right front caliper so I took that. Found a beat-up front strut body so I took one of them too. Starter motor and master cylinder, Dashboard and gauges. Side Mirror Glass... Main battery/Alternator harness. Fuel filler neck.

I still have the 924S parts all over the place. Right now I am going to steal the torque tube to put in my 944 Turbo S since my Turbo S unit has wobble in it.

Honestly all of my family's 944s (2 84 and 2 951) have parts from the 924S.

Parts cars are GREAT!!!!
