Whatever you do, don't put the oil all in at once. Put in 5 liters and top off using the dipstick.

Overfilling with oil is almost as bad as running low on it! (Fouls plugs, seals, etc.)

my brother says that he *has* to use 5w-60 for his e46 m3, and it's US$18.00/litre available only from the dealership. don't think he's looked around, but then again, i have never seen that stuff on any shelf, anywhere. oil is not cheap, but it might be soon thanks to the political aspirations of our president, <shrug>.

20W50 Valvoline Racing-

Good stuff, stay way far away from Quakker State. High sulfur content makes for jello in the crankcase. Seen enough of them to know.

I stick with what Bruce Anderson recommends as he probably sees the inside of more P-Car motors than anyone. Kendall 20-50w which is $1.59 a qt at Autozone. Now for my wifes car, Mobil 1 and it took 8 qts as that is what it was designed to use.

Buy what you like and change it often!!

Amsoil 20-50 for the summer and amsoil 10-40 for the winter...

10-30 sounds way too thin!

Looking at the manual on page 65 it shows 10-30 as good for between ~(-15) degrees F to about 65-70 degrees F.

I'm sure it gets warmer than 65-70 degrees in MA, doesn't it?

Email me if you need an amsoil dealer or want to try some.

Castrol GTX 20W-50

Recommended by Markus Blazak, he uses it in all cars he services and all cars he races.

See my post in this thread regarding 951 oil.
One of them has a nikasil-treated block on his 951 Cup and runs it with this oil.
