Default My latest project - Steering wheel restoration/re-dying

Before:

After:

So this was my latest project, probably put around 2 hours of work into it for the most part, as you can see the first picture there was some sanding to get some of the wear down and to strip some of the current dye, but it really didn't look much better than that.

The finish after was a bit more glossy than expected, but it looks great in my opinion, and with the limited work involved it really wasn't too hard.

Let me know if you guys want a write-up, I mostly used the DIY in the DIY forum, thanks!

Nice job! Although... the first picture shows that you may have sanded most of the stitching away. I hope that doesn't loosen up over time.

The stitching on that part is purely decorative. More than anything to continue the line of stitching from the spokes back to the hub. The only thing holding that leather on is glue.

Don't worry I didn't sand that away, I would feel pretty bad if I did, it was like that

a couple questions, what kind of dye did you use and does anyone have experience with how this wears over time? I would think the dye would would wear off pretty quick and make a mess.

I would go with SEM Color Coat ,large varieties of color to choose from + if done rigth will last a long time ,if your thinking black I'll choose satin. Not trying to put down zblowfish wheel but it's a little to shiny for my taste even though he done a pretty job looking back at the condition the wheel was prior to tinting it.

I used duplicolor leather/vinyl spray dye, a lot like the SEM but in gloss, I have heard that it is pretty durable, I haven't had any problems with it so far, after some wiping with a mr. clean magic eraser it didn't pick up any dye like it did before, I don't know if that means it is more durable then before or not.

I agree, I may resand in the future if it wears and spray it with a nice satin black finish, but for now this looks good.

If it makes any difference here it is currently without a flash (the after photo was taken with a flash so of course it will show the gloss like crazy)

Would you recommend satin for a black dash also.
I want to keep an original look.

thanks

As you can see in the pic ,part of the steering (brown) shifter boot **** & speaker grills was done & came out good, I tinted my three spoke OE steering wheel that was in there prior to the Dino one & it came out just fine.

What kind of Dye and what not did you use? I might do this sooner than expected especially if its cheap enough.

Ok the stuff is call (Grison leather ReColor ) either Dark or ligth browne depend on your interior.Cost appox $12.oo to $14.00 for a 4oz spray can, you'll have plenty beleive me.I always did buy a couple of can for future use this way if you want to do other trims you'll have the same color. DIY_ remove steering or any trims that need tinting,"on leather parts only" clean prior to shooting with (TANA) leather cleaner, has to be done in a well ventilated area wearing breathing protection.Shoot the back of the steering first it will give you an idea what it look like, resiste the temptation of shooting to much of a thick layer.Source for Grison leather ReColor will be at any shoe maker or leather shop.Have fun. _______Eric look good but a little complicated to work with.Never had to sand mine or mixe anything ,just clean & shoot.
