Ok, Steve you half cheated. The a/f monitor from that website (my 944 spec car site) is a tiny little 10-LED thinggy (just much smaller box dimentions than you find on the market). Those *should* be available for purchase in about 6 weeks. The one pictured above is a numerical display, and those should be on the market early summerish (though some lucky 944 guys will have them in their cars in about a week). Since my company, Paradox Engineering, is a manufacturer, both these products will be availble from various distributors, at this point that would be Huntley Racing and Speedforce Racing, so if you are interested and want more information, or you want to buy one when they're available, call either of them. Or, if you are a distributor and want to keep up with the Jones', you can email me or ring my office at (858) 722-5378

correct me if I am wrong, but I see duel 555 timers and a 16 pin ... IC.. which could be some kind of compairator. A LED..

ok, need a hint. Does it hook up to something or is it stand alone.. and was I right on the components above.

If the breadboard is used correctly (i.e. the red 'troughs' are positive feed, the blue are for ground), it *looks* like the LED comes on with the power (sub circuit looks like power to resistor to led to ground). I could be wrong. This would be much easier if the IC part #s were readable <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="wink.gif" />

the 2 8-pins are Voltage comparators...

after the second VC is a pnp that hooks into a relay and turns on a light...

the 16 pin is a NAND Gate

goodluck

then I guess that It's an air fuel monitor. I win!!

as far as I can figure the two voltage comparators compare 2 voltages to a set input voltage (different or the same for each one) and then sends power to the Nand. when both signals to the Nand are the same it flips the relay and turns on the light...

what its used for is beyond me. Could be many things... let me give it a guess though.

A duel over voltage warning light that only comes on if both systems are at over (or under) voltage.

hmmmmmmm.....i dont think i can accept a description this time...

here another guess....the relay/light will turn on at a certain voltage....when the voltage drops, it will stay on to a lower voltage then the selectice voltage to turn it on....

Its a heater control unit or a fan control, or some sort of miscellanous closed loop feedback control unit with some sort of hystersis. That can be about a million things. Temperature regulator (turns on fan, ac compressor, heating element, etc.), cruise control unit (speed regulation). If there is a temperature probe of some sort, I'd guess that it clicks the light on when the temp gets too high, and keeps it on until the temp has dropped back down again - perhaps the light is simulating a big fan or something...

some good guessing...

the actual design is called a schmitt trigger...

what it does is turns the light on at 2V. When the voltage is turned off, the light goes out at the input voltage of .8V

A visual pressure guage? Turns on when pressure is high enough or too low and just glows the rest of the time?

You can buy a schmitt trigger IC for like... $0.12... but its good to learn how they essentially work on a device level... as your education progresses you just might learn how they work on a transistor level, then on a semiconductor.
