yeah 16v is great, until it breaks ...

I put in a new chain from the dealer and replaced the tensioner with one that only had 35,000kms and new pads.

At this point i'm starting to see the price of owning a p-car... or at least i think.
I'm just about ready to sell this car.

Is the 944S motor really this problematic? Is this going to happen over and over? I realize i still need to find a good exhaust cam, but the intake cam i bought only has a few less Kms then mine did when i found the teeth, I'm worried it's going to let go again soon.

What's the verdic?
1) Be prepared to swap cams over and over unless i penny up and by referb'd ones from say 944online? (assuming i get lucky again and it doesnt grenade the motor next time a tooth lets go)
or
2) Drive the car the way it was meant to be... it was just an unlucky incident.

I sold my Porsche 944 a couple of years ago because I was going back to school to finish my degree, and we had a newborn baby.

But, I took a huge hit when I sold my Porsche. It wasn't so much that I needed the money as the fact that I just needed to be free of the fact that I had 9 cars (and a golf cart). I also didn't have the time to continue to spend maintaining the fleet every weekend, IE: starting them up, washing them, driving them all into the cul-de-sac, etc...

In the end, I had over $4,000 bucks that I put into a $1,500 dollar car (for a total of $5,500 bucks) that I ended up selling for $2,018.

I still really miss the car.

As much as I am a purist in nearly everything I do... I've got to be totally honest with you. The 2.5 engine, as excellent as it was for it's day (quicker and more powerful than even larger displacement engines of the time), is not an inexpensive motor to maintain.

If I'm ever put into the situation of having to significantly repair a Porsche 944 motor, or replace it... I would just go with a Renegade LS/V8 kit. I suppose it's different if you have something that's relatively unique and rare, like perhaps a 1988 Porsche 944 Turbo-S or whatever... but, let's be honest. It will still SOUND awesome, it will have ridiculous amounts of power, and it will be as easy to work on as your grandfather's 1950s pickup truck was.

ya i saw your other thread... from the pic it looks like your car was an 8V. The "S" models are 16V 2.5L

Hi, yeah, I was aware of that. I was simply just stating in general. S or no S, it's still basically the same engine with a different ECM controller and a different cyl head. (and obviously, a different intake manifold), but much of the engine is basically the same.

The cost to repair and rebuild are all the same... very expensive.

every few days, another 944 block goes offline.

many cars then sit, and some eventually junked... the odd car gets a powerplant built or transplanted.

the long-term solution is Detroit muscle from "GM/Chevrolet," and vote the Democrats out of office.

I agree with you on both accounts.

Personally though, I'd much rather have a Ford 4.6 in there, but I just don't see any way that engine would fit reasonably. The LS motor, even if it is from British Leyland... I mean, General Motors... is still the best option.

Once I caught up on maintenence (which was many thousand dollars in the end I bet), the S has been rediculously reliable - has needed nothing in ~4 years (well, ok now it needs AC clutch). And I drove it real hard ~70 miles a day for maybe 7 years until I started driving the C4 everyday.
Say what you will about the S, I'll never let go of mine.

I have to agree. I just sold ours last week, it was my son's and he needed a truck for work. It never failed to start or deliver excellent performance and gas mileage even at 180K miles. It passed smog like a new car after I installed a good cat. The PO had done all the costly stuff like tensioner/clutch/belts/AC work through a shop. The only problem I ever had was the radiator side tank leaking and the ISV getting stuck causing it to pull oil on cold starts for some reason. Other than that it ran great and was as dependable as the old 83 and 951 I've owned and loved. The S was levels above my 83 in performance IMO. Show me where else you can buy a $2800 car with that kind of pedigree?

Every one is saying how great the S's gas mileage is.... mind you when i bought mine it had been sitting for a while... but i ran $80 worth of fuel through it in the 10 days i drove it before i had to put it away.

What does every one consider good MPG?

It's not great. I get ~22mpg @ 70~80mph.
My Carrera gets ~24mpg.

Sounds like the balance shaft belt is too tight.
