Post TURBO ENGINE QUESTION

I bought a 1986 Turbo engine for a project that I have decided not to do. Therefore, my question is the motor worth more in parts or as a whole.
The motor came out of a 1986 with 120k miles. The previous owner replaced the motor because the engine was putting out white smoke and thought he had blown a head gasket.
The Turbocharger is locked up and I think this was the cause of the white smoke, too rich.
Your opinions are appreciated.
Thanks in advance, Terry

How much would you want for the whole thing?

First, I am NOT a part dealer, rather a part buyer but here we go. You can get good money for the head if it is good condition. The pan and flywheel are other items that seem to sell but the block is a little harder to turn over. When it is all said and done, I think you can get around $1K for the parts or sell the entire engine for the same amount. It is a lot less hassle selling the entire engine since you deal with only one person. You are going to have a problem with the fact the motor was pulled with running issues. I had an engine shipped to me by motor freight, it was banded to a pallet and covered with a thick piece of cardboard and plastic wrapped. It cost under $100 to ship it over 1K miles and arrived in good shape.

Well, the pan isn't worth much out of an '86 since one usually wants the later baffeled pans or at least one with an oil level sensor.

If the turbo is in bad shape, you would do well to get $1000 + ship for the entire thing and parting it will be about the same, maybe less (?) $200 - 300 for a good head, $200 for manifold and x-over, ? for pistons, rods are worth $200 if good, being forged and maybe might sell the block, but dont count on it unless the cyl. spec out perfect - if they do, you have some good $$$ there.

The pieces will ship UPS, but shipping the motor will req. DHL or the likes and you will need to crate it - major hassle and extra $. I've heard of others selling engines via Greyhound, might be an option if you find a buyer.

Good luck!

Ahmet I have about $1250 in the engine, but Brian and Matt feel it is worth about $1k.
Thanks for asking, Terry
