Calling Tranny Experts: Strange Grinding Noise Persists
When my car is idling after starting up, as I push the clutch in and put the shifter into 1st gear (or any other gear), a strange grinding noise comes from the back of the car. This is without the car even moving. The noise seems to come from the tranny, though I don't have a stethoscope to prove it. Maybe it's a shield or something loose? The noise goes away after I drive the car around. I'm jacking the car up on Thursday to check the tranny fluid, even though I just filled it with Mobile 1 synthetic.
The clutch seems to be working fine. Any thoughts on this?
Thanks in advance.

- Car not moving
- Engine running
If nothing is not rotating, the shifting might produce a "clunck" of some sort but no grinding sounds.
This leaves only one possibility: the layshaft must be rotating.
This indicates some problem with the clutch.
Could be master / slave cylinder or air in the system.

Sounds like a good point to start.
Check brake fluid level first, if low (below intake for clutch), than something is leaking.
This could be the brakes so pay attention!!
Master cylinder for clutch is above the pedal on the firewall inside the car.
You might want to check there for fluid gathered in the carpet and around the link pin with the pedal, indicating a dying set of seals.
If one cylinder is leaking, then replace both (master & slave).
Saves you a repetition in a few weeks time.

sm, unless the noise only happens while your selecting each gear, I'd rule out internal tranny parts.
If you have your foot pressing the clutch pedal, and your in any gear, and not moving, there are NO moving parts in the transmission under this condition...!
Cheers
