Default Door trim rotting

While working on my passenger side window, I removed the trim to find this (below). The trim is pretty shot. Do you think it's better if I (a) leave it alone; (b) scrape off all the rotten/moldy trim backing, apply some waterproof tape (or something else) and replace; (c) try to find a new piece of trim. I'd bet the other side is the same.

For what it's worth, when it's in place you can see none of this; works completely fine, looks fine.
