Default Tach not working

I have a 1986 na. Today while driving I noticed the tach not working properly. All the gauges are working fine and the mpg needle is working fine and the arrow light comes on when it is suppose to. My problem with the tach is that it registers 0 whent the car is idling and only goes as high as 2500 rpms. No matter how much I rev the car it goes up incrementaly but not fast enough. Any ideas?
