I wish Porsche spent 1/4 of what they spent developing the 6-bangers on the 944's

The 944 led almost half the race and finished AHEAD of a gaggle of 911s, and I'm sure none of them were pleased to finish BEHIND a lowly 944. Only ONE u-boat commander was faster than the #2 944.

I'm just sayin.

There is a laundry list of reasons why the 944/968 (and 928) were axed.

ODB2 and side impact regulations taking effect in 1996 were huge factors. Add to that very slow sales, it didn't make sense to update these platforms from the 70's for the new standards.

Interesting mix of 911s... 964, 3.2, and "longhoods" mixing it up!

I can't see OBD2 being an issue... Perhaps a "paper" issue, but in reality, updating engine management is not a reason to kill a car.

I was told 97 crash standards for the doors killed the Volvo 242 for example, so I can believe the redesign of the 944 might have ended up looking like the boxster.

They killed it cause it was ugly.

...and it had pop-up headlights.

The popup headlights, ugly as they were, were the best solution in a world where DOT mandated glass nipples on standard bulbs.

No really, glass nipples.

I said ODB2 AND upcoming crash standards were part of the reason.

Do a search on regulations that kicked in from 97-00 that were already known before the 968 came out. Porsche made a decision back then to axe the 944 in favor of a fresh design = Boaster which was first shown to the public in 1993.....
What was the first year of the Boxster? 1997

Bottom line it was a mostly unchanged 1970's design that was going to be far too costly to bring up to date. There was no single reason, but a compilation. They (944/928) were also very expensive to manufacture compared to the Boxster & 993. It wasn't worth it to re-tool for a more cost effective 944/928 design. Was better to simply start over.

To tell you the truth, I bought my first 924 because I've always dreamed to own a P (and yes, a 911). I didnt like the look of it when I bought it, but hey, it was Porsche.

After 3 years, 3rd P, 924S, 944 N/A, and now 951, I sit outside sometimes in front of my car and just enjoy looking at it. I find it more and more beautiful everyday, and find 911's uglier and uglier everyday. Not that my dream as fade away,
but I love my 951.

If I ever win the million, I think I'll buy ten 944 before buying one 911.

The cosmetic updates brought forth in 951 made for an especially beautiful car.
