275+ HP guys...
What type of gas mileage do you guys get? Does any driveability suffer? Got a spare turbo engine from a guy, so I'm trying to get some feasible ideas for power, while at the same time drive a good distance on a tank of gas. Looking for responses from all power levels. Thanks guys/gals.

So with a lot of these moderate mods, big torque and horse gains, you guys don't lose a lot in terms of fuel consumption?

I referring to the gas used making quite a bit more than stock power. I was asking the kinda-souped up turbo owners what kind of mileage they get making around 300 HP or so. Sorry for the lack of clarification.

Okay, I'll post. My car makes 270 rwhp. I can get about 400 miles on 18 gallons of fuel cruising on the highway, which works out to 22 mpg. This is with me cruising at 80 - 90 mph, but definitely not being conservative when it is time to accelerate.
OTOH, around town, with a little bit of freeway driving and some backroads fun, I see about 200 miles out of 18 gallons. That works out to 11 mpg. Driving around town, I have to make up the time that I lose at all those damn stop signs!
I bet track gas mileage would be somewhere around 5 mpg.
With these cars, gas mileage is pretty much determined by your right foot.

I'm puttin out about 340rwhp, and if you keep your right foot out of it, as Steve said, your gas mileage really wont be that compromised. Should still be able to get 400 miles to the tank on highways.
Of course, around town is a COMPLETELY different story.

I agree with Steve, it mostly depends upon how you drive (and your chip-mapping). With my '86 18-gallon tank, I've gotten 500-miles out of it on a drive straight from San Francisco all the way to Manhattan Beach in a single day. But I had cruise-control on at 80mph pretty much non-stop. On the track, I get about 12-MPG. EDIT ADD: at the time, I was getting 290rwhp with an upgraded turbo. Under partial-throttle, a turbo can actually get better gas-mileage than an NA car, because the non-spooled turbo acts as a restrictor, limiting the flow through the engine (with less gas to match that flow).
A lot of the gas-consumption is based upon your chips as well. As noted by Vince in this thread: <a href="http://forums.rennlist.com/cgi-bin/rennforums/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=18&t=002444" target="_blank">Topic: MAF Stuff.....AGAIN!! </a>, he lost 6-MPG when he installed his AutoThority chips. Probably lost power as well since the mid-range on those chips are incredibly rich (look for the various dyno charts on those chips). Since the mid-range is where you'll be doing most of your driving, a rich mixture here will certainly impact your gas-mileage.
Vince mentioned that he got his original gas-mileage back and that's with 260rwhp as well (close to max for stock turbo & injectors @ 15psi).

Where are you planning on going where there will be no gas stations for 200 miles? Mexico? I went on a 4000 mile road trip in my 951 five months ago without any problems, but I WOULD be concerned with being 200 miles from any gas station and presumably any kind of communication.

What does this KLR computer do? I know it's related to the turbo somehow, but how? I was thinking about aftermarket control system, already have one in mind, with it I can customize fuel and spark maps for any driving condition...racing, traveling, around town, emission regulatory, etc. That way I wouldn't be restricted to one chip setting. The system I'm looking at can monitor/control any form of forced induction. I just didn't know how the KLR worked exactly. Thanks a lot.

LOL, no, just being sarcastic. I don't think there is a place anywhere that doesn't have a station within 200 miles of another.

You know, a couple of weeks ago I put 20 gallons into the gas tank of my '86 951. Also, I looked at the PET and noticed that the gas tank has the same part numbers for all years of 951's.
Perhaps your car is one of the first 951's or maybe the original tank was replaced with the wrong part for some reason.
