Post DE Tire Choice

I know there are a lot of threads on this but not very much on the Kumho Ecsta V700. I was going to buy them but my mechanic is dead set against them. He said they don't last and is pushing hard for the Pilot Sport Cups. The latest Pano article seems to verify this since the Kumhos did not make it to the second day of testing on a road course. I am also considering the Yoko 032R as a compromise on the cost side. I would appreciate any real experience with respect to longevity with any of these tires. My car is an 83 that is only used for DE's so I am not after the last second. Also the only street duty the car gets is driving to the track which is about 40 miles away.

I don't know much about this but I've heard that the Toyo DOT tires last longer than the Kumhos or Hoosiers at the cost of not being as sticky as those models.

I am using the Kumho V700 Victoracers this year (have always used BFG in the past) and I'm happy with them, considering how cheap they are to run. Pretty good grip and consistency throughout the tire life. I have gotten ten days from the rears and expect they will be good for maybe three more; the first set of fronts lasted about seven or so days, not corded but getting slick.

I've driven to/from the track on the Kumhos a few times and they're fine for that.

This is on a 2780 lb car w/ under 150 hp, but I run with a fast crowd and push it pretty hard.

Reports on the Pilot Sport Cups are excellent - expensive, but performance near the Hoosiers, and tire life something like the Victoracers. I may switch to them next season to see if I can shave a little lap time.

I've ridden on the Yokos and Toyos on the track but haven't driven them at speed, so can't really offer a comparison.

I have no firsthand experience with the new V700, but have had the A032 and Toyo RA-1. Both these tires wore very well, with the Yoke prolly lasting a bit longer. From what I have read the new V700 is supposed to be stickier than the older Victoracer, so I wouldn't think it would last as long. I have friends who use the Victoracer and found it lasted as long as the Yoke.

Since you are NOT looking for that last second, I would think you might want to look at the Falken Azenis. Grassroots Motorsports recently tested these and found they are very close in times to a true R-compound tire, but MUCH less expensive as it is street tire.

I will need new AX tires next year and will probably choose the Toyo again.

I have run Yokos for a couple years. I just switched to the Khumos. I have a lot of buddies that run the Khumos and swear by them. I always found the Yokos a bit slippery. The Khumos stick just a little better IMO. I have never tried the Hoosiers or Michelins, I can't justify $200+ per tire for DE. Most of my buddies on Khumos get a whole summer out of them. I got about the same from the Yokos.

That's always the big butt,,,er,,but. I've been to TireRack and read revues on Yokos and Kumhos and they always have a few who like them a lot, find 'em a good value for the money,,,"BUT,,,if you really want the best, get some Hoosiers." Ahh well,,,one of these days my daughters will be out of college and successful and well off AND DADDY CAN GET SOME DAMN HOOSIERS!!! Oh,,sorry,,I'll just go now. <img src="graemlins/crying.gif" border="0" alt="[crying]" />
