Question early klr brain in a 88 turbo s

I just bought a silver rose, when I bought it the guy said it had a blown turbo. Upon pulling it apart, the turbo looked good. the car drives real well and the turbo is spinning (I can get to 1 bar but no more) I did notice though that he has the older style klr box (with the 24 pin chip)
does anyone know how that might affect my car???

The DME is the one thats 28 pin in the 88 turbo S and 89 turbo's...the KLR is 24 pin in all turbo's.

You're only getting to 1 bar boost, or only getting to 1 bar on the in dash gauge?

if the turbo was blown, the car would run absolutely horrible. I dont think hte dme could make accomodations for a situation that was that radical!?! <img src="confused.gif" border="0">

Adrial's right on the KLR box, furthermore, if a replacement was made at a dealer, for a faulty DME on a car prior to 88, 28pin DME's were used for replacments. I have a 24 pin DME and a 28pin, Porsche rebuilt box, that I can swap with no adverse affects.

Does anyone know if the older boxes are 16bit, vs. 32 bit in comparison to the newer type..?

Hmmmm... all of the Intel 8051 used in the Bosch DME are 8-bit CPUs:
  • CPU with boolean processor
  • 5 or 6 interrupts: 2 are external, 2 priority levels
  • 2 or 3 16-bit timer/counters
  • programmable full-duplex serial port (baud rate provided by one of the timers)
  • 32 I/O lines (four 8-bit ports)
Engine-management is a pretty simple task, such that computer speed isn't even a factor. One of the university ME department's project was to convert a GameBoy hand-held toy console into an engine-management system.

And the reason you can use the 24-pin & 28-pin DME interchangeably is that the 8k EPROM in the later DME units contain the same data the earlier 4k EPROMs had in the 24-pin DMEs (16x16 maps were still used, never upgraded to higher-resolution).
