Headlight motor problems

Headlight motor problems
The headlight motor in my '88 951 does not seem to be working. I've checked the relay (it makes a noise when I switch the headlights on), I've checked the contacts on the headlight switch (they look clean), I've checked the fuses (all are good).
I'm no electrical guru, but are there any simple checks I can do with a test light (or other) to help diagnose this problem?
Any help is much appreciated,
Steve

Inside the gearhead of the motor is a plastic camlike arrangement with contacts that make/break for the motor cycle. Sometimes these give up the ghost and develpo a considerable amount of resistance. Once the cover of the gearhead is off you have access to the actual motor leads. you can check the motor for continuity.
I am basing this on a teardown I did about six years ago. I was able to repair the motor by cleaning the internal contacts. Your problem may be different.
Good luck

Agreed, I would try what the previous post suggested, but, like me, your problem may be that the actual gears that actuate the rod are worn down. I had the same problem on my 84' 944 and it turned out that all the electrics were OK, but that the main gear was made of a wierd plastic composite material and had just worn down to the point it would no longer engage. This is not a replacement part, so I ponied up for a new one from Autotechniks in Houston for about $200. Very easy to replace.
