Post vibrations after belt change

Oops... I think???

I changed cam and balance belts over the weekend, and now I have a reasonably bad vibration. It seems pretty constant upto around 400rpm, then gets a little worse.

I marked up all of the shafts so I could check when it wnet back together, and I had another look tonight... they still line up.

The only thing I can think of is that one of the balance shafts turned itself 360degrees while the belts were off.

Is this possible, and if so, how can i remedy it??

Or can anyone suggest something else it may be??

Had the same problem. Found that one of the shaft had been turned 360 and had to pull turn and reset the gear in order to correct problem. Sorry Just my experience. If it is a balance shaft out 360 you need to resolve this soon. could cause other expencive damage not including breaking the timing belt and thrashing your motor.

Thanks Tabo,

Oh well, back into the fray!!

Is there a way of telling which one it is, and which way to turn it (don't want to have to try all 16 combinations!!!)

Oh... and does anyone know what size the hex is on the adjuster? I'm getting aches from using a set of adjustable pliers!!

The countershaft doesn't drive anything else, if it spins 360 degrees then it is in the same spot it started and this would NOT affect your belt vibrating.

The problem is that the belts are timed correctly. With crankshaft of TDC No. 1 the marks on the counterbalance shafts should line up with the marks on the rear belt cover. The counterbalance gear can go on one of two ways, if the gear has not been removed, this shouldn't be a problem.

The hex on the adjuster is 24 if it is the original adjuster and 27 if updated. Hope this helps.

y.

You know.... I've just been searching through the archives, and it seems recently there have been a few discussions about removing the balance shafts completely!!!

As this will be a 5.30-in-the-morning job (need to do it before work..... , it seems relatively easy to wire them up so they can't rotate, and see how it goes. I can always re-install them in a week or so if the vibrations are THAT bad!!!

Plus hey, it's an extra 6-30HP (depending on who you ask!)

It's possible that the balance shaft engagement solenoid. is not working. thus unwiring it should help you determine if they rotated 360.. hope that helps.
