Shortened stock shifter

I second this, I want to rebuild my shifter linkage and maybe shorten the throw a little while I'm in there. And do all this on a college student's budget! Seriously, those short shift kits are kinda pricey for what you get, it would be nice to be able to do it myself.

wouldn't it be easier to just grip the shifter from a lower part instead of from the top? I think that shortening the height is basically what short shifters for our cars do, so it doesn't seem worth the price. If you're changing the shifter just because the current one is worn out then it might be nice to try. What I really like about short shifters is the round construction that makes possible the use of aftermarket *****.

I plan on folding mine in half.
You see, in SCCA IT rules the only thing I can do is to bend the shift lever where it is above the tunnel. So, I'm going to fold it in half and make a new shift ****. Haven't done it yet though.

Shortening the shifter works fine. If you spend the $$$ and order a "short shifter" from SFR...thats all you get (rip-off here??_ Pick out your **** (I used a 5-speed Hurst ****, black), cut the shifter, and weld on the appropiate threaded bolt!

No, I am trying to find out if someone has shortened, in other words cut down the stock shift linkage handle to retain the original shifter, just in a lower position. I don't want the SFR short shift kit, and I don't want to use an aftermarket ****. I just want to lower the stock original shifter height a little. I was wondering if anyone has done this and how much they cut it down. I don't want to cut too much and then the original shifter wont stay securely on the shaft. Or find out if it can be cut down at all and still hold the stock ****. <img border="0" alt="[cheers]" title="" src="graemlins/beerchug.gif" />

Don't know why you couldn't take a section out of the stock shifter and retain the stock ****. have you ever peeled back the boot and viewed the shifter. it's just a piece of steel.

I shortened mine quite some time ago. You can see a picture of it by checking out the link to my gallery page in my signature. I'll scan in the old e-mail list procedure I followed to do it tomorrow.

I know this string has to do with shortening the height of the shifter, and not the throw, but this is something that I have a question about:
I got an Autothority Short Shift Kit which replaces the OE selector lever (with a shorter lever) between the selector rod and the shift rod in the rear of the car btwn the transmission and the left rear wheel well. I then had the shift rod shortened by moving the sleeve further up the rod (didn't cut the shift rod). Now the shift lever, instead of sitting slightly forward towards the front of the car in neutral, is angled back towards me by an inch or two. Has anyone done this before? It seems to shift fine, but I'm wondering about durability, especially in track events?
Secondly, the only problem I've noticed is that the rubber shift boot bunches up a bit in 2nd and reverse...anyone know if you can buy thinner inner boots for the 944 Turbo?
In case you're wondering why I did this, its because I'm 6'8" and my Sparco seats are mounted directly to the floor all the way back flush with the fronts of the rear "seats." Also added two 50mm steering wheel spacers behind a 35mm dished Sparco steering wheel.
