Any hints on how to get this thing off? Tips that involve the destruction of the key are allowed, and in fact, encouraged (since I'm 1/2 of the way there).

My solution was to find the biggest dykes i could and just pull. It came out easy. Just gotta have the right tool.
And whether or not you destroy it...replace it.

Wow, this thing still isn't out. Anything I use to grab it, pliers, end cutters, vice grips etc just slip off. The key is pretty damaged from all this, so I think I'm just going to have to drill it out. A question, is this key shaped like the balance shaft keys, in the sense that it can 'pivot'? Figures this front end reseal+belt job would get derailed by a little key...

I just took mine out 5 min ago with vise grips. Lock onto the key with the vise grips aligned with the cam and grab the key in the center and use the vg as a lever and lift out the key. Very easy. Dress the key with a file if necessary.
