Default widest front and rear tires?

I have an 85.5 944 na with stock Phone Dial wheels that I love on this car and will be doing tires soon, the inside of the gas door says 215/60VR15 the car has 215/60R15. What is the widest tires I can get to fit with out rubbing I am looking at BF Goodrich radial T/A 245/60R15 rears and 225/60R15 front, Will the fronts take 235's?
any one running these tires? or these's sizes?
any pros or cons to running wider tires besides the increased grip?
thanks

Depends on your wheels. Stock Phone dials are 7" wide. Your bigger challenge will be finding available 15" tires. Most would recommend a 225-50-15 that can be run on all four corners and offers a slight gearing benefit. If you can find a 245, its likely to impact your gearing negatively, as a 245-50 or 60 will be taller than the original 215-60 tire.

It you want to "fill" the fenders, you are better off finding wider wheels or running adaptors

There is no real drawback to running wider tires. Wider in the front will help reduce understeer. Wider in the rear tends to increase understeer. If you have manual steering it will be harder to drive at lower speeds. Also, you may find yourself tossed around in truck ruts on the highway.

+1 for 225/50/15 all around

Pro: Improved traction, slightly better gear characteristics, no difference in under/oversteer

Con: Gotta get used to shorter looking tires

if you want to go wider and keep stock tire height get aftermarket rims just for the simple fact that there is many more 16-18s in our size range

wider tires will result in a noisier ride, worse gas mileage, worse top speed, and worse acceleration (assuming there is no slippage with the slimmer tires). this is all due to greater friction.

the pros have already been mentioned.

I used to have 225/50/15 front and 245/50/15 rear Dunlop SP8000, on phones. I now have 245/50/16 front, 255/50/16 rear BFG G-Force sports on '86 turbo phones. Its been lowered an inch. No rubbing, but the fronts just barely clear.

Sorry for hijacking - but i have a set of early tele-dials - ET 23.

Im looking for the optimum tyre to fit. What do you suggest?

Been told 245/45/16 will fit on the back and 225/50/16 front.

Ray - you're hijacking However, that said, if you have 7 and 8 x 16s yes, you can run either 205/55-16 or 225/50-16 front and either 225/50-16 or 245/45-16 rear. The 205/225 combo was the "standard" turbo size. The 225/245 was an optional size on the same wheels.

I recently installed 225/60R15 on my phonies. There isn't much space left. I would be very surprised if 245/60R15 would fit without rubbing. You would be much better off trying a 50 series (245/50R15) if you want to go that wide. Remember, it's not just the width we're talking about here - the diameter grows with the width too (unless you drop the aspect ratio).

My personal belief is that 225 is as wide as you want to go on a 7" rim. In fact - I think it is the optimal size for a 7" rim.

Early phone dials are 15" in diameter. Unless you are talking about the early 951 phone dials.
