Question 1985.5 2.5L to a 2.7L or 3.0L Can it be done at home?

I got this 1985.5 944 for $1000 from this lady who left it in her garage for a year after a divorce settlement. Numerous work has been done to the car since then and finally running like a 944 with 130,000. It's not great but I enjoy it. I was reading up on my Haynes manual and noticed that the 2.7L has a bore of 104 mm to the 100mm on the 2.5L and the 3.0L had 104 x 88 mm. I was just wondering what one has to do to convert the 2.5L to a 2.7L or the 3.0L other than bore and stroke. Just another idea i'm messing around with.

A 2.7 should be a straightforward swap, a 3.0 is a little tougher since it's a 16 valve there will be more little details to sort out.

You can send your block out and have it resleeved to the bigger bore, find a 3.0 crank, then order a set of j&E pistons from summitt and matching eagle rods.
Machine work on the block should be about $900-1200 depending on the shop. Crank about the same then another $1200 for pistons, rods and misc gaskets ect.
The extra 30ci will net you nearly 40hp and at least that in torque.
Good tuning,Maf conversion (from Pro-m)and exhaust shoud get you to 200-210 rwhp.
Resleeve your stock block and you can run your stock head..There is pleanty of Valve flow for 3.0 of displacement.

Charlee, We'll wory about that swap when you find a parts car, but trust me, it may be a little more involved! <img border="0" alt="[hiha]" title="" src="graemlins/roflmao.gif" />

just like anything in life, it's always comes down to 'bang for the buck'

over and over rennlisters will tell you that if you want more power..sell the NA and buy a 951...(lots of bargins out there) & I've never seen anyone disputing this advice

seems to me that race4food is saying for what you will spend to get another 40hp, it could be more than what you will spend to buy a complete 951 (which will already have the brakes, suspension & drivetrain etc to match)

but if it is the challange you are looking for, yes, you can get a '89 8 valve 2.7L and put a 3.0L crank, then change to expensive custom pistons (the wrist pin location is different on the 3.0L 16 valve pistons to allow the 'stroker' rods to clear the block) or better yet find a 16 valve, 3.0L (S2) engine w/harness, DME yadda, yadda and for maybe 3 to 4 grand still have less HP than a 2.5 turbo. unless you then add a turbo, chip it blah, blah...and now you've got well over 10 grand into it assuming no labor and you got bargin prices on parts...not to mention that Porsche only offered a turbo'd 8 valve to the unwashed masses for good reason

well, all I'm saying is, it can be done! If you can make a 346 LS1 sb Chevy into a 427, I'm sure you can get the n/a or even a turbo engine to 3.0!! heck, maybe a 3.4l, since huntley do sell a 3.4 s2 package! But you are right, it's cheaper getting a turbo. That's why, i'm saving up for one, since my n/a was totaled 2 weeks after i got it!

Nah the 968 swap isn't too bad if you can do the labor yourself.. cheaper than buying a 951 and getting it up to snuff, more reliable in the end too.

Check out this thread on the topic:

And the cool part is, the 9m company in the UK will soon be selling a modified intake system that will bump the 968 engine up to around ~300hp .. sounds fun.

Overall you can't modify the 968 engine as much as the 951 but this swap is a viable alternative to the usual 'sell, and buy a turbo'.
