I mis-spoke, mine are actually 17x7 (wishful thinking I guess).

As for the center caps, if your wheels are cookie cutters then they will not fit. The ones from the Phone Dials will work though. Are you sure your wheels are cookie cutters? I was not aware they were offered on the late offset cars - not saying they weren't, just that I didn't know they were available after the 86 model year.

Hi folks,

So I dug around PET for the following information.

The following are the part numbers and specification of the 17" Cup 2 rims that came on the 993:

F: 7.0x17 ET 55 Cup 2 Rim - 993-362-124-00
R: 9.0x17 ET 55 Cup 2 Rim - 993-362-128-00

Following is the same for the 968 with the 17" Cup 2 rims option (available from 1994 on):

F: 7.5x17 ET 65 Cup 2 Rim - 993-362-124-05
R: 9.0x17 ET 55 Cup 2 Rim - 993-362-128-00

As you can see, the 993 and 968 share the same rear rim but the 968 has a wider front rim with a deeper offset.

So if you use 17" rims from an actual 993 (like I am), your running a 7.0x17 and not 7.5x17 up front.

You can verify this very quickly by looking at two numbers cast into the rim on either side of the valve stem. One is the rim-width and the other is the rim-offset.

After looking in my copy of Original Porsche 924/944/968 I realize that I was mistakenly calling them by the wrong name. I'm not sure what they're called - they are fairly flat and have seven sort of rectangular slots around the outside edge.

It probably doesn't matter if the center caps will fit anyway as the PO had both the wheels and caps dipped in chrome, so I think the chrome center caps would clash with any replacement wheels. I'll probably end up trying to sell the wheels, tires and caps as a set.

BTW, what is the finish on the cup wheels? Are they painted or some sort of alloy?

The 993 Cups are painted. IIRC there are plastic center cap knock offs available from Performance at a decent price. I just used the ones from my Phone Dials.

Your current wheels are most likely the ones we call Dish wheels or Design 90's. A lot of folks like those. I think they are better looking than the Phone Dials, especially in chrome. My guess is that you could get most if not all of the cash required for the 993's by selling your current wheels. <img border="0" alt="[burnout]" title="" src="graemlins/burnout.gif" />

Thanks icat, that's encouraging news that I may be able to make enough off my current wheels to get a new set - wheels and tires are not cheap! I've got receipts where the PO spent $400 getting the wheels chromed so they are really very nice wheels. Unfortunately I don't like the way they look.

I actually like the phone dials better than my wheels - I guess I prefer less metal and more airspace in a wheel. Mine are almost totally solid with just those little slots around the outside edge. To each his own, right?

Again I ask - will the front cups on either a 993 or 968 work on a '87 951?

The additional offset on the 968 wheels is for the increase in width. As far as I know, both will work. keep in mind that 10mm is only .39 inches.

Sounds like he is referring to the manhole covers, not Design 90s (which have a triangular opening). The flat dish wheels (ala early 928) have rectangular slots and are usually polished (manhole covers).

Design 90's are typically painted and look very much like the clubsports (forged) except they are cast and have a lip at the edge of the wheel. The clubsports have no lip and are dished to the bead. Fronts dished in, rears dished out.

I believe the manhole covers/flat dish wheels are forged also (strong), although heavy and ugly (to some).

Yup, those are the man-hole wheels. I'm not gone on them myself. They are forged so they're worth a bit more than a cast rim.

The non-M030 late offest 951 (i.e. 87 and later), the 944 S2 and the 968 have essentially the same suspension and brakes.

When its comes to M030 cars, it gets a little more complicated.
