Default air filter?

My 85.5 944 has an after market air filter (K&N round type) that just hose clamp screws to the intake (I have the old air box) is this a good thing or bad for the engine?
thanks

The round filter is sucking hot air, while the stock will be drawing cool air from the fender.

So yea it can hinder performance.

My cone filter (since replaced with OEM) actually had a bracket to support it (used the holes for the stock units mounting). Ditch the aftermarket, imho.

Generally speaking, paper filters are better than cloth K&Ns, which are more likely to let through dirt and grit.

K&N are best for track applications, where constant maintenance is the norm as opposed to street driven cars where you just fit the filter and leave it while it collects dirt, leaves, etc. for months on end.

Paper filters are better at stopping all this stuff.

This will start the usual K&N jihad, but I agree that the K&N passes too much grit to be worth the minuscule performance benefits. Some say the grit that they let through is too small to cause significant wear over the life of the engine, but I'm not comfortable with it. Some of these motors go 300K miles. I had K&N pods on one of my bikes (from the PO) and was amazed at how much grit I found stuck in the intake boots.

If you want some laughs put a smear of grease or K&N oil in your intake after the filter and see how much dirt it collects.

If you figure you will throw a rod at 150K miles rather than wear out your engine the K&N might never be a factor but IMO it's just not good enough at filtering.

Most 944 spec racers use the stock air box and paper filter. 944 track cars can suck in alot of rubber in the fender intake. I tend to pull my filter and clean out the rubber every few days. This is even with a stock mini fender liner used in the early 944's.

The good thing about the fender intake is that it is both cool air and slightly pressuized. Most cars develop some positive pressure in the fenders as the move through the air.
